Cossy, I disagree that too much is being made. How can it be right to have newspapers (including the daily Mail) referring to this individual as female? Reports of the trial referred to the person on trial as she. Men commit many more violent or sexual offences than women. Distorting the stats has implications for our prisons and CJS.
Why can’t this person be referred to as a trans woman or a man who identifies as a woman, or on other occasions as a cat.

Scarlet Blake
(170 Posts)Murderous, violent killer Scarlet Blake is to be held in a male prison! At last some acknowledgement that putting TW in female prisons is wrong.
Oh and if we are talking about discrimination, I think it is deeply discriminatory to some of the most vulnerable women in our society (on the whole crimes committed by females are very different to Male crimes) to place a man in a female prison. . I hope those who pretend that sex does not matter dont cause further discrimination towards women.
lock himself clean should have read lick 🤷♀️

^one doesn’t have to have physically “transitioned” to be able to call themself male or female.^ Actually Cossy male and female are biological sex definitions across all mammals and any organism that reproduces by sexual reproduction. It is not possible for humans or indeed any mammals to change their sex, regardless of any surgery or drugs taken or not. Scarlett sometimes identified himself as a cat, would you consider him a cat too?
Whilst identifying as a cat he should be made to use a litter tray, left to lock himself clean along with being fed on cat food and saucers of water…

Correct decision without a doubt.

Surely the point here are the crimes this person committed, not what they identify as, one doesn’t have to have physically “transitioned” to be able to call themself male or female.
Too much is being made of this persons gender, they committed appalling crimes and should be punished accordingly. I don’t care if they go to a male or female prison, just that they are locked away for a very very long time.
We can denigrate transgenders all we like, but I hope this awful case doesn’t result in even more discrimination towards transgender people and the LQBT+ community.
You may not care whether he goes to a male or female prison, but I guarantee most of the female prisoners and their families will not want them to have to be housed alongside this male monster. Those who don't expect themselves or their friends and families to be imprisoned often show a distinct lack of care about the safety and dignity of female prisoners.

It is far more than which prison this person is sent to, it is about whether the crime is registered as a male committing these dreadful acts or a female.
I see no reason why female crime figures should be distorted by the addition of what is becoming more prevalent transwomen violent crimes being apportioned to female statistics.

Quite.
Presumably Blake will be recorded under the "Female" heading for statistical purposes - thus distorting them.
There has to be a re-consideration - a separate grouping for transgender individuals? Or does "inclusivity" mean that we have to ignore facts?
If Blake has gone through male puberty - he's a man identifying as a woman. And that does not make him a woman.
Well said maddyone before we all tie ourselves in knots.
Sex. Not gender.

No-one is denigrating ^transgenders (sic) at all.
In fact, this man's actions do transgender people a great disservice.
Of course it is important that this crime should not be statistically counted as a crime by a female. It was a vicious, sexually motivated murder of a young man which required a great deal strength.
And of course he should not be incarcerated in a women's prison.
I think the point Cossy, is which type of prison this person is in. There are no mixed prisons and no trans prisons, so the choice for the authorities is binary.

He also perpetrated a vile murder of a cat. Very, very cruel.
One of the columnists in the Guardian has resigned after 20 years writing for them as she was outraged that poor reporting in said newspaper did not (at first) mention ‘transgender’ - just ‘woman’
Well done her.
Even if Blake had undergone some kind of therapy (we are not informed if or what), he had gone through male puberty.

In my view it is further abuse of victims and their families to lie about the perpetrator in this way.
The Guardian, the BBC are all laughing stocks, how on earth are we supposed to trust them on other issues
Yes indeed.

I find Scarlett Blake’s crimes loathsome. But I believe trans women are women, and her crimes don’t detract from that.
He’s a male. Male crimes should be recorded as male crimes, however the perpetrator chooses to identify and whatever they believe.
He's a male with the strength to carry out such a heinous crime.
Obviously not a woman and not identifying as a cat at the time.
Totally agree Calli. I think crimes should be reported according to ‘sex at birth’ not the fashionable ‘gender choice’.
One of the columnists in the Guardian has resigned after 20 years writing for them as she was outraged that poor reporting in said newspaper did not (at first) mention ‘transgender’ - just ‘woman’. The next day the newspaper did report the crime as by ‘transgender’but it was deep within the article apparently where the deviant kept being referred to as ‘she’.
Crass nonsense. PC would gone mad. Do they take us for fools?
Apparently yes, they try to. In the name of ‘inclusivity, divergence’ etc I suppose. Honestly these days it reminds me of The Emperor’s New Clothes.
Let’s not tell is as it is eh?
Blake told her parents (both doctors) of her trans ID when she was 12. Treatment at the Tavistock started when he was 17 but so far, I haven’t seen the detail.
I’m not suggesting all trans people have mh problems but we shouldn’t forget that some do.
It’s sad that it’s so true gg13

Blake is referred to as she in the guardian, daily mail and bbc. He is to serve his sentence in the male prison estate thankfully.
Will his crimes be recorded as having been committed by a woman though. Unlike Amber Spyglass, it matters to me that crimes committed by trans women are not recorded as female crimes. Is it impossible to have a section for the crimes of trans women? They certainly figure in sex offences and the last thing we need is the argument that women can be violent/be perpetrators of sex offences being raised with this as ‘proof’
👏👏👏
It is not intolerance that demands this should not be recorded as a crime by a woman.
It is a truth and, as Mollygo said And by claiming to be a TW (though not a cat this time) his actions have struck yet another blow against the lives all those peace loving, harmless transwomen.
This man should be thrown in a dark cell and the key thrown away for what he done to the poor innocent cat (as a cat person when I read the details it reduced me to tears) As for the murder, life should in this case mean life.
We have to stop this pretence that if a man puts on a dress, heels and plasters his face with makeup they have the right to call themselves a woman.
We have many gay friends, along with what used to be called a cross dresser, one of my best friends has an Uncle who 30 plus years has dressed as a women, in his words he abhors this transgender nonsense
Good! I’m pleased the psychopathic sadist is going where he belongs in a men’s’ prison.
I fully accept that Scarlett Blake is a Trans woman, but when deciding where people go into a situation which involves physical care then it is physical attributes that should be the deciding factor.
As far as I can understand Scarlett Blake is still physically a man with penis and gonads and nothing has been said about her taking any hormone drugs that could affect her performing, sexually, as a man, should she choose.
I think the judge was right to send her to a male prison. Had she undergone surgery to make her genitalia physically female, and had she been taking hormones to make her body behave as if it was female then the situation may have been different.
