Should any marches around or near the Cenotaph this weekend not be allowed?
(697 Posts)Following the defacing of a Cenotaph in Rotherham yesterday, would it be advisable for the police to rule that marches in or around the area of the Cenotaph should not be allowed, this weekend only?
A poppy seller was attacked by people in a huge crowd this week, people who have been marching on previous weekends have committed hate crimes by calling for Jews to be eliminated. Should the sanctity of the Cenotaph and the Remembrance Service be at the mercy of the marchers to choose to do the right thing? Why was a Cenotaph thought to be a legitimate target in Rotherham?
Surely those who live in our liberal democracy should understand why this weekend is particularly special to so many people. Those of us who live in this country, a liberal democracy, should understand that compared to so many people in the world, we are very lucky to live in a country that affords us great freedoms, including the right to protest peacefully. Peaceful protest however, does not include the right to call for the deaths of other people, to attack poppy sellers or others, or to deface public buildings.
Why are the London police refusing to use the laws that are already available to ban any marching around this area for for this one weekend?

Dr.Watson yesterday was such a frightening day, thank you
for ‘the truth’
Which truth was that?
PS. I must take a trip to Specsavers because I didn't spot any truth.

For Glorianny -- lots of confusion re your apparent hero Corbyn. He did NOT win the actual Gandhi (the correct spelling) Peace Prize. The one he did get is awarded by a U.K. Organisation....not to be mistaken for the Gandhi Peace Prize awarded by the Government of India, with Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu as some of the many recipients....a different league.
That IS the same Jezza that was caught laying a wreath to honour the organisers of the Munich Olympic massacre. He claimed he didn't realise why his hosts had taken him several hours into the Tunisian desert for the ceremony. As you do.
The same Corbyn who was arrested for trying to get the trial of the Brighton IRA bombers stopped (only killed 5, safely convicted), and campaigned to get the Israeli Embassy bombers released (caught red-handed, safely convicted, appeal even rejected by the Euro CoHR)?? Perhaps the latter matches his inability to deal with anti-Semitism within Labour, a fiasco that went on for over 4 years and had the whole Labour hierarchy apologising, plus then-Unions leader Mccluskey and Momentum founder Jon Lansman?
He also claimed to be instrumental with getting the IRA turning towards the N Ireland peace process, which the late Mo Mowlam, who actually did most of that work, rubbished on several occasions. This thread isn't about Corbyn, but it's unfortunate that you've introduced his name with many commenters concerned about anti-Semitic feelings, and he certainly wouldn't be concerned about them.
So I think people will have got the message you don't like Corbyn? Are you always so negative?
DrWatson
Thx Dinah. And PLEASE answer my point re the hypocrisy of those marchers, absolutely NO interest in the Yemeni victims of Iran's ongoing proxy way, nor when ISIL was killing tens of thousands in Iraq and Syria. Perhaps THEY would have liked to hear about such compassion . . .which oddly wasn't forthcoming when Israel wasn't involved?
Why does it concern you?
DrWatson
Yes FrogLady, doubtless you mean well. But - do you actually think any of the Iranian leaders, Hamas, or the Israel Govt gives a jot for any such demo, here, in America, Paris, or anywhere? What exactly are you hoping to achieve with any such march, other than making yourself feel slightly better?
Why shouldn't she want to make herself feel better?
Why do you post what you do? Does it make you feel better?

Have a look at the Metropolitan Police website to see how many peace marchers they are trying to identify for suspicion of hate crimes.
How many?

Well Maizie, do you think that one film from Edinburgh means that all the other assaults and defacings didn't happen? Bizarre.
Which ones do you mean?

According to this report there none of the 300,000 pro-Palestinian marchers were arrested whereas there were many arrests of far-right counter-protesters

I watched sky and bbc 10 on coverage of today’s marches. The peace marches were huge - estimates of 300,000 with very few arrests. The marchers included many women and children and a wide age demographic. They were peaceful and disciplined. I hope the few holding anti semitic banners are identified and arrested.
The counter demonstrators - ‘England forever !’ Not in my name or the names of the majority. Awful ignorant and alcohol fuelled aggressive racists. They attacked the police. Many more arrests from that contingent. They’re responsible for their behaviour but Suella Braverman should be sacked
The met police are tweeting requests for information on a number of people with regard to hate crime. One is allegedly a member of a CLP. Starmer has behaved like a leader throughout this, so if this true I am sure there will be consequences.

Jewish people are free to carry their flag
I saw many draped over shoulders of Jewish visitors to AuschwitzDo you believe Palestinians are also allowed to carry their flag, or 'wear' one for that matter?
Why would you ask this question? I’m not partisan
Can Hamas be trusted to hold fire ?
Have been following this important thread on and off but have prob missed many nuances.
No I don’t think other marches should be/have been banned but they should keep away from the Cenotaph area tomorrow morning (as I understand they intend).
Don’t understand what the counter-protesters are protesting about.
Most of all I think that this govt should be supporting calls for a cease-fire which is what the protesters want, or most of them. IMO Macron put the case well. What is so wrong with the idea?
Deplorable but inevitable that any arrests or being detained should happen today.

I see nothing wrong in Sunak’s statement at all.
Of course you don't.
I should think many people will see nothing wrong in the statement put out by Sunak, not just me.The shadow Home Sec, Yvette Cooper said similar things today.

Take it up with the BBC and Sky News.
It’s not Orwellian at all, it’s simply easier for the news to say counter protesters as they don’t know the back story behind everyone taking part in the protest. Most will be EDL or football thugs but perhaps a few others as well.
They were protesting as they didn’t like the pro Palestine marchers doing this on the 11/11.

I imagine the counter protesters were far right thugs, but the news item just said ‘counter protesters’.
But they were just thugs. Counter Protesters is surely a misnomer?
'Counter protestors' is just Orwellian New Speak.
They weren't anywhere near the organised protest march and they weren't protesting about anything.
It will be interesting to watch PMQs next week.
