I am perfectly happy here near the coast in England and Brexit has not torn my peaceful retirement asunder. I’m not remotely jealous of someone who decides to live in Switzerland and lose a hefty chunk of their pension courtesy of the exchange rate. I have no idea why anyone would be jealous of that. I don’t fear for the futures of my child and grandchild either - I have no reason whatsoever to do so. Strange notion. I can honestly say that I never think about Brexit. I have far more absorbing interests.

It seems to me that the more one tries to explain one's situation, the more many of think that there is a problem with our lives for some reason. Reading a lot into a few words.

I have only ever once, or maybe twice, met someone on GN being purposely obtuse when I tried to explain a particular situation of mine.

The final comment of Fleurpepper's, in a few words, about jealousy is enough to make things abundantly clear to people.

And young people who made the huge mistake not to vote, are truly hacked off, and won't make that mistake again.

Our present day issues doubtless have myriad causes - who is to say how things would have been
IF Brexit hadn’t happened
IF the pandemic hadn’t happened
IF Putin hadn’t started a war in Ukraine
IF there wasn’t a global recession
IF Boris Johnson hadn’t stuck to his previous day job - only wishing.

I'm not keen on the expression "I'm alright Jack" as it carries negative vibes. I don't think anyone from the UK on this thread is exhibiting self-centered complacency or one-upmanship here. On the contrary, many of us are unhappy and disappointed with the way Brexit has turned out, and I don’t think anyone is saying that life is cushy for them. (I know I am severely out of pocket every trip abroad to the tune of a few hundred £s over the stupid dog travel certificate, I know I have to wait an age these days to get my own passport checked and stamped, I know my DS experiences difficulty in finding enough engineers to fill the vacancies on his team), and yes, I agree that all these issues are due to Brexit.

BUT, my own situation in the bigger picture is good, and I refuse to spend every day moaning about a few inconveniences or getting vexed about problems which are worldwide and nothing to do with Brexit.

It’s not so much what we can’t produce, it’s what we can but don’t.

I don’t envy those who live overseas, I’ve travelled widely and I like leafy England, although if you are younger with a skill the whole world is your oyster.

Because “Free Range” means they live or die, cattle are rounded up once a year to collect the calves and useful culls, that’s it, Sheep twice a year - they need to be shorn, welfare or environmental rules don’t exist

Very easy indeed. I don’t agonise over anything - least of all Brexit. Try it. A peaceful and contented life is a good life.

Thank you for your honesty OP in admitting that you live in Switzerland, not the East Midlands with a “direct line to St Pancras”
Why was that such a big deal?
It would be interesting to hear how another non-EU country copes with the bureaucracy and minutiae of dealing with the EU, particularly, as in your case, when surrounded by it.

Toured that region a few years ago, Interlaken, Saanen to Gruyere, lovely all the cows had bells round their necks, so I guess there are big farm payments to maintain traditions and please the tourists.

I think we would all agree on the importance of happy cows and animal welfare in general - not a new concept either.

I have followed this thread with interest and have 2 observations.

British pensions are really intended for people living and/or working in Britain - whether they are adequate is immaterial in this context - living abroad is the choice of the recipients.

The people voted for Brexit - rightly or wrongly, misled or not.

We are where we are.

And, fp, how do you know the cows are very, very happy?

DH has a very good NHS pension (similar to your DH's) I have a very small pension and, with our state pensions, we are very comfortably off.

The point about the NHS not being up to scratch is not strictly true either. It saved my life last year, our daughter has had brilliant treatment for her BC, my brother, DH's brother have all recently had brilliant treatment under the NHS. And, those are the tip of the iceberg.

Please stop putting this country down.

But it’s not. It’s banging the anti- Brexit drum at all costs.
There are also those like Kitty and many others who would vouch for the fact that its “demise” has, as Mark Twain commented, been greatly exaggerated.
