Women police officers. Now at 35% nationally.

I see from figures published today that 35% of police are women. Or alternatively you could say that the percentage of male police is down to 65%.

Thoughts? Do you consider this to be an unconditionally good thing, and genuine progress? Would a "police service" made up of 50% women be even better? Or does it instead make you feel slightly uncomfortable, for reasons that might not be considered entirely politically correct in the modern ? Does a police service need to contain a certain, not insubstantial, 'martial' or 'alpha-male' aspect in order to operate optimally or even effectively?

I know it's a question of 'horses for courses', but given the wider socio-economic background, what do you believe is the ratio of stallions to mares that will be required in the short to medium term?

I would suggest that the alpha Male thing hasnt been working that well for certain police forces lately.

Is it do you believe maleness per se that is the problem, or rather certain unsatisfactory manifestations of maleness?

Well, as we have one of each in our family, I think it's a good thing. I've always been of the opinion that it if you have right attributes for the job, that should be all that matters.

Well men as a sex are more likely to commit the violent sexual crimes which seem to have plagued some forces. I dont think this means men shouldnt be police officers obviously. Might be useful for forces to act on the red flags when they waving in their faces.

So women alone are going to provide the “Force” in policing when the vast majority of offenders are men.

I sometimes think that women can diffuse a situation : there’s no kudos in thumping a female. I’m speaking as an ex- secondary school teacher, where I knew this to be true. However, I feel that a good mix of both is ideal - especially if they are able to eradicate the harassment and sexism.
