Sorry was that too deep for you? I was talking about taxes and how high taxes are bad for enterprise. If everyone is dependent on handouts this too is bad for enterprise and I might add bad for engendering a feeling of self worth in the population.

Senior Tories want Braverman to stop her racist rhetoric
(86 Posts)They are worried that her rhetoric will put off swing voters, as well as ruin the image of the Tory party.
I think that boat sailed months ago.
Ah, bless your heart, explaining enterprise and reward like a nineteenth century factory owner.
🤣🤣🤣
Better than sounding like a communist.
Ooohhh, I'm cut to the quick. 🥺
Now we know why the tories get in. Selfishness and 19th century attitudes rule, OK?
🤣
It is not selfish to want the best for everyone. We simply seem to disagree about what that best is.
The original post was about Bravermans racist language. ?She is very right wing, in cahoots with the ERG , sees herself as a future leader of the Tories and I think uses this style of language to keep in the headlines. As Attorney General she did not shine and politicised the position.Whatever problems there are for the Home Office they will not be solved any easier by the use of such divisive ,racist language. It is done deliberately. Is this the sort of person who should be in such high office ?
I cannot envisage any question to which the right answer could ever be "Suella Braverman for PM" or even "Suella Braverman for Home Secretary" or "Suella Braverman as MP"
I never though it could ever be possible to have a Home Secretary as bad as Pritti Patel - let alone worse!

What do you think are the main problems facing the country then, MayBee70? Housing shortage? Lack of school places? An overwhelmed NHS? Low pay? High taxes? Couldn’t all these be eased if there were fewer people in the country?
The people coming to this country were the ones working in care homes, hospitals etc. The housing shortage is because this government isn’t providing social housing. Too happy to allow their rich friends to rent properties out to people. Schools? Again, the government needs to put more money into them. They’re just blaming migrants for years of underfunding in just about everything. And the back log in processing ( oh how I hate that term) is down to cut backs and underfunding. We also have an ageing population and will probably need younger people to come here from other countries in the future to look after us!
So it is alright to rely on immigration instead of training enough people to do the jobs that need doing. We have had that attitude in the NHS for over seventy years and look where we are now. Labour is supposed to be the champion of the NHS but has been prepared to keep wages and costs low by using a foreign trained workforce. An absolute disgrace in my opinion.
And on the topic of housing there would be more good quality rental housing if councils were prepared to work with small landlords instead of treating them as the enemy and squeezing as much money out of them as possible.
Def not right to rely on immigration instead of training, by any government.

There aren't enough people to do the lowest paid jobs. That’s why there are over 1m job vacancies. There has been 13 years in power for the Tories to address historical skills shortages in the NHS. How long do you think they need?

Just remind me, GrannyRose, which party in government abolished the bursaries for nurses, discouraging them from entering the profession with the prospect of having to pay back their student loans out of the poor wages it offers. And which party in government froze those wages?
I appreciate that you don't think that we've had 'proper' tory governments for the last 13 years, so what would a 'proper' tory government have done?
And on the subject of social housing, we wouldn't have quite such a shortage now if Thatcher hadn't insisted on selling off council housing very cheaply (to buy votes) and not allowing councils to build more social housing with the proceeds...
Leaving provision to 'the market' hasn't worked very well, has it?

And it’s this government that seems to have put a cap on the number of doctors that can be trained. What do you make of that?
I don't understand why it wasn't OK to have "not in my name" Iraq posters in our windows.
I hope Braverman is "shuffled out" but can't see it happening somehow. her remarks were beyond the plan as far as I'm concerned. The Baroness Warsi interview on Women's Hour was brilliant (read summary here)

Beyond the pale not plan

He doesn't have to have suggestions for solving it. He's not even in opposition. He's commenting on Braverman's behaviour and inflammatory rhetoric and I agree with his observation.
Just because people don't like Campbell doesn't make Braverman right.
Doesn't make him right either.
Freya5, where are you going with this? If you disagree with AC you must think that Suella Braverman's behaviour and language is acceptable. So just say you support her.
Braverman has repeatedly used racially charged language in her response to various issues, including immigration, grooming, and law-breaking in general. I believe that her comments are carefully framed to appeal to the unpleasant, base instincts of a small, yet still politically influential portion of the populace. I think that she has also recognised that as regards the next General Election, the Tory party is a dead man walking, and that she is positioning herself to take over from a defeated Sunak. What a very deep hole we are in right now, and frankly, I don't have much faith that Starmer and Co. have the tools to dig us out of it. However, it's on the cards that they'll certainly get the chance next time around..

What is a communist? Do you actually know what real Marxism is, not the term being used carelessly for far left.
Genuine question. I was brought up by idealistic communists and studied politics and economics at uni, and am fed up with this careless use of the word.
Suella Braverman is doing a sterling job of explaining to us why all of the woes in modern Britain are due to immigration, of course. GrannyRose is very exercised by housing shortages and the NHS under pressure, which seem to be attributed to arrivals at our shores. Sadly, this is not so, and as I have posted before, these problems are exacerbated by us, dear GNetters. We are living longer in our homes, living sicker and requiring lots of medical and social care. Demographics do not lie. Oh - and the problems will continue as more of us tip over into extreme old age, and the newborns won't be there to fund us ( current rate of reproduction is just over 1.5 children per couple)
Braverman's propaganda is calculated to appeal to the most racist voters, now and in a future leadership contest. Sunak should sack her immediately.
Not so long ago we were being encouraged to have at least 3 children here - one each and one for our country. Now we just import people and let other countries raise them and train them.

Are you talking about the UK or Australia?
Or do both countries have the same problem; aging population not being replaced by its own citizens?
