It all speaks to me of the abysmal failure of the American educational system to teach critical thinking.
Ours isn’t much better
If critical-thinking involves questioning what you are told - the accepted 'wisdom', or what you read or hear, then it becomes a minefield in the schoolroom.
We expect scientists, doctors, etc to be able to evaluate and analyse information objectively - they're looking at Science and Medicine.
But when it comes to government, politics and the economy - it requires questioning the status-quo, and any teacher who attempted that would probably be labelled a Marxist or a Leftie.
I'd imagine it's even more problematic in the USA - I don't think the right-wing fundamentalist Christians are keen on their ideology being questioned.
I'm not a Marxist or Communist, not particularly 'woke' nor squarely Left, but have been called all of those simply for stating that I'd like to see a more equitable society with less of a gap between the extremely wealthy and the impoverished which, I believe, is possible even under Capitalism.
