Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

My key takeaways from this:

The corrupt, transactional legacy of Boris Johnson will take some lengthy unpicking

When next negotiating its Charter, the BBC needs to ensure more independence from government influence (regardless of which party is in government)

The BBC needs more confidence. The bile spewed by the Mail and it’s ilk does not reflect the views of the majority), but even if it did, the BBC shouldn’t be cowering in the face of bigotry, and, regardless of future licence fee negotiations, it should not be afraid of the (any) government

The sports team working with the BBC rocks.

I agree with all of the above.

Me too, well done Gary, and well done sports people, you have done the cause of free speech proud.

Just listening to JOB - listeners seem in some agreement that the government is running scared that sport is getting involved in disagreement over the Tory policy, because it will reach a much bigger audience than is normally the case.

That is why it is being closed down asap.

Doodledog Mon 13-Mar-23 12:19:21

I disagree, Maudi. What about people who have no money for a subscription? Also, there are those who simply won't pay for anything they can get free, whether they 'can afford' it or not, so would opt for ad-carrying channels and be swayed by the control of those paying for the ads, who would not allow any reporting of anything that might affect their profits. Having an independent (in theory at least) public broadcasting service is incredibly important to democracy, as this debacle has shown.

I think it should be funded more generously - maybe not from licences but from public money - and there should be a representative board of directors who are not, and never can be, influenced by the government (eg members should never be allowed to get a peerage or stand for parliament).

MayBee70 Mon 13-Mar-23 12:21:19

Yes. Let’s get rid of programmes like Happy Valley, The English, Gardeners World, all the David Attenborough programmes, Radio 6 ( the best music station there is) etc etc. Because the BBC is far more than just its news programmes ( which I don’t listen to). I just hope the government don't use this as an excuse to do away with the BBC altogether.

Defund the BBC. Time for a subscription service all the people /posters who are happy to pay for it can. If you're happy to pay for Lineker's inflated salary £1.3 million for a few hours presenting the football you can and Zoe Ball's salary £1 million plus, the so called BBC talent you can. I think more people will be cancelling their TV License in protest.

I totally agree with Siope's post about the rotten, corrupt legacy from Johnson which is tainting everything in public life. It is an interesting co-incidence that the most vociferous critics of Lineker's tweet are ardent viewers of GB News.
Just sayin'.

You are basically paying for a subscription now with the TV Licence £150 odd.

BoJo has a lot to answer for including appointing a Tory donor as Chair of the BBC. Today's announcement is designed to take the heat out of the controversey and kick the can down the road by setting up an independent inquiry. One suspects the Tory government was as shocked as the BBC at the level of support for Lineker and wanted the issue shelved so as not to gobble up media attention which they would prefer to see on Tory initiatives (such as they are).

Methinks she doth protest too much.

I won't be cancelling my TV licence, I don't watch Lineker or any other sports pundit because I don't watch sports, I also don't watch quiz shows, or reality TV, but that is all personal and free choice and that I defend.

You may also wish to look up the meaning of 'bigot'

Nothing wrong with watching GB News, provided you watch or read other news programmes to get a balance.

Statement made in 2016.

The Prince of Wales has warned that the rise of populist extremism and intolerance towards other faiths risks repeating the “horrors” of the Holocaust.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s religious Thought for the Day slot, the prince delivered an outspoken attack against religious hatred and pleaded for a welcoming attitude to those fleeing persecution.

He said: “We are now seeing the rise of many populist groups across the world that are increasingly aggressive to those who adhere to a minority faith. All of this has deeply disturbing echoes of the dark days of the 1930s.“My parents’ generation fought and died in a battle against intolerance, monstrous extremism and inhuman attempts to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe.”

The prince did not mention any politicians by name, but his address will be seen by some as a veiled reference to the election of Donald Trump in the US, the rise of the far right in Europe, and increasingly hostile attitudes to refugees in the UK.

“That nearly 70 years later we should still be seeing such evil persecution is to me beyond all belief,” he said. “We owe it to those who suffered and died so horribly not to repeat the horrors of the past.”

Well I always wondered why
whenever I posted you pop up seems I have a follower or perhaps a more sinister well I can't mention the T word hanging on my every word it seems. Googling me on the Internet well I never, its a good job I don't give details of where I live on here. Whatever floats your boat. Yes I do watch GBnews but I can make up my own mind re Lineker, the TV Licence and immigration thank you unlike the Gary followers who hang on his every word it seems.

Casdon Mon 13-Mar-23 13:24:47

I didn’t Google you on the internet Maudi, I merely typed ‘Maudi GB TV on the Gransnet search bar, and a lot of references came up. Your views are so diametrically opposed to mine on virtually every subject that when you post I remember some of the things that I’ve found outrageously racist or provocative that you’ve said before. If that makes me your troll so be it.

I don't hang on every word that Lineker says, I just defend his right to have an opinion, as a citizen of this country. Big difference. I loathe the very idea of a news programme headed by Farage or Dorries but I defend your right to watch it. This is what a free society is about, you won't notice it's gone until it's too late.

What is the T word?

Also, is GB News on Freeview Channel 7/8? On my online planner that shows as London News (I don't live in London) and on the TV it shows as 'Local News' (no region specified), but is full of right-wing commentators such as Jeremy Kyle and David Bull. I haven't found anything I want to watch on there, but it's just occurred to me that it is probably GB News.

You are thinking of Talk TV / Talk Radio
Kyle and Bull are on there, not GB News

Urmstongran Mon 13-Mar-23 13:56:11

GB News is 216 on our remote.

Eloethan Mon 13-Mar-23 13:59:45

Maudi You obviously think the best form of defence is attack. Casdon disproved your statement that you didn't watch GB News. It seems you think it is acceptable to label Casdon's actions as "sinister" and imply she is a troll in order to detract from your own lack of transparency. In fact, it doesn't require too much effort to look at a specific person's posts on Gransnet. I think, for the sake of clarity, it is important that this facility is available, as some people are either very forgetful as to what they have said or knowingly seek to disclaim it.

And that is exactly what this argument is about (although some of the Tory sheeple will not realise that is what they are doing).

Listening to a Tory hard-right MP complaining this morning, his only interest seemed to be what Lineker earns. In any other organisation where the friends and allies of the right seem to be overpaid, they would be swift to tell us that the person is paid that amount because of the income he/she adds to the business. I imagine the BBC does much the same when working out what they can afford to pay Lineker. It would be reasonable to assume that salaries for freelancers are worked out relative to the revenue they generate. So, if you are a Tory, it's one rule for the rich company CEO and another for a sports presenter just because he does not toe the Conservative party line.

This same MP kept repeating that the Lineker tweet was offensive. Free speech means we are allowed to offend. He could not and did not say that it was wrong in its facts, but that those who use such provocative language cannot cope with being called out on it. A small child slaps another small child but tells all the rest in the playground that they cannot "tell". Seriously?
