I am not sure how useful comparisons to 1930 s Germany are anymore for any situation, the comparison has been used in such bizarre ways as to become completely meaningless, I blocked quite a few accounts during covid when people compared the lockdown with the treatment of Jewish people in nazi Getmany.

It gets boring and ridiculous on forums.

Unfortunately, it's still true, even if some people find it boring. The language being used by this government (and some of its anti-democratic actions) have a frightening similarity with those used by the Nazi party in 1930s Germany. Moreover, some people are reacting in exactly the same way as Germans did in the 1930s.

PS. I'm bored with threads about the Royal Family and usually just scroll past them. Any chance they could be banned on GN?

Thanks for the info GG. My future son-in-law's father was a refugee, who had spoken against the regime in his home country. I'm just saddened that people think he and his family are a "blight" - I'm looking forward to a happy occasion.

Not sure anyone thinks that people fleeing for their lives are a blight growstuff I definitely do not.

However, living on the outskirts of an area where the drug dealers are Eastern European as are the pimps running the prostitutes. It is not unreasonable to understand why some folks are worried about who is entering the U.K. and what their reasons are.

Somebody on this thread described them as a blight.

And some of the "people" are behaving in the same way the "Volk" did in 1930s Germany. The parallels are disturbing.

There is a difference here though; the Germans were 'othering' their fellow citizens, Germans who had lived there since the Middle Ages, people who were running businesses, good citizens integrated into German society but with their own culture and identity.

People coming here on boats need to be processed far more quickly so that those who are genuine refugees can work, integrate and become part of our society and those who come here who are not genuine refugees from war and persecution can be sent home again.

The government needs to get to grips with this.

Housing is cheaper up north growstuff you do know that.
It’s cheaper for the government to house people here.

I don’t think anyone is a ‘blight’. People are people and most are nice.
I just don’t agree with getting here by rubber dinghy.

Expecting the poorest and most vulnerable UK citizens to absorb a disproportionate number of the new arrivals (with the resultant pressures on local services, schools, GP surgeries, and hospitals) was always going to lead to certain deprived communities being less than enthusiastic about accomodating them. That doesn't necessary come from a place of bigotry.......more desperation.

It's also why many working class people see middle class enthusiasm for taking in refugees as consequence-free virtue signalling. It's easy to be altruistic if it comes at no personal cost.

What he said in Qatar was on behalf of and sanctioned by the BBC, so I understand.

I heard that he had been a critic of politics here which landed him in trouble with the BBC, this is well before the present tweets.

No, it isn't. The language and rhetorical devices used by leaders have a remarkable similarity. As a group, people are responding in the same way as Germans dis in the early 1930s. I find it unbelievable that an intelligent woman can't see that.

Does anybody know about the protocols for a Nikah ceremony? My daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law are holding one in a few weeks. I guess it would be rude to tell my future son-in-law that he and his family are blighting our lives.

DD and I went to one several years ago.

Had a lovely time, It’s different from a Hen Do as the groom and his male relatives were there.

Delicious food and lots of Bollywood Dancing the wedding party females all had their hands and lower arms painted with the most intricate henna designs.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hopefully the groom will be there! My understanding is that it's a blessing for the couple. It will be in a mosque.

The one we went to wasn’t in a mosque, it was an up-market (sorry I dislike that description but not sure how else to describe the venue) restaurant, the Imam was present.
