Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

What on earth is that supposed to mean?

They still use detector vans and other methods which can show if you are watching live TV.

Weren't detector vans a PR stunt to fool people into thinking they could be found out and fined for not having a TV licence?

Don’t know about now but one came to our area and our house! About 20 years ago, and they were prepared to be stroppy until I showed them our licence.Red faces back to the van.
Now so many people pay online for it I doubt they’re still doing this.

Anyway, Larry the cat has tweeted that he's refusing the BBC's offer to present MotD.

I've been out for a few hours, so am not up to date with how things are progressing, but I'm guessing that following Larry's tweet, the BBC quickly put out a statement implying that they have told Larry that he will not be presenting MotD? 😉

Results of YouGov poll today - gransnet views are a microcosm of the wider public opinion by the looks of it.

They could scrape the barrel and ask BoJo to do it.

Yes they were. There were very few of them, adorned as they were with the aerials and bits and bobs on the roof. Eventually they said they would no longer be marked and the technology was wholly contained within the vehicle. The technology didn't exist back then to identify exactly which flat in a block, or house in a terrace was watching TV. I'm not sure it even exists in any affordable way today. There has not been a single conviction for TV licence evasion using the evidence of a detector van which surely indicates something about their credibility?

It’s all well and good Gary Lineker and his mates having principles but 4 months ago they were living it up in Qatar, a country with a shocking human rights record, where were their principles then ?

Double standards

Double standards indeed! The BBC have definitely dug themselves into a very large hole. The BBC want their presenters to be impartial - whilst they are blatantly proven to not be impartial themselves!

that sort of proves the point of what the BBC expect to wrt posting his opinions publicly and his actual job role

James Cleverly was at the World Cup too I believe, there wa no ban on MPs attending and several others attended too.

It’s just double standards.

Well happily business as usual here as we're a rugby household. However rather tense as England is losing.Even the dog looks worried due to DHs tension!

Perhaps GL will come back as a “Freelancer” then he can say what he likes…….apparently 😀

He can now, according to the guidelines (that I posted earlier)

So, the relevant guideline here is this: "15.3.13 Where individuals identify themselves as being linked with the BBC, or are programme makers, editorial staff, reporters or presenters primarily associated with the BBC, their public expressions of opinion have the potential to compromise the BBC’s impartiality and to damage its reputation. This includes the use of social media and writing letters to the press. Opinions expressed on social media are put into the public domain, can be shared and are searchable...

The risk is greater where the public expressions of opinion overlap with the area of the individual’s work.

The risk is lower where an individual is expressing views publicly on an unrelated area, for example, a sports or science presenter expressing views on politics or the arts."

(taken from a series of tweets by a former employee in the BBC complaints dept)

varian Sat 11-Mar-23 18:11:11

He is a freelancer, and as a sports reporter, not a political commentator, he is not barred from expressing a view online.

He did not make a controversial comment on politics in the middle of a sports report.

MaizieD Sat 11-Mar-23 18:11:39

So, if the BBC hadn't made a fuss no-one would have reacted in the way they have.

As it is, they now have a large number of people against them for cancelling a national treasure...

I hear BT Sport have asked him to front their football programme. Next season? Not sure. I missed when.

I do hope not! They've put their prices up enough without having to cover GL's excessive wages.

Mollygo Sat 11-Mar-23 18:34:13

Rosie51 I forgot that aspect. Otherwise I’d have said great idea. Not that we’d get a reduction from BBC for not paying GL’s wages.
