Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Mar-23 11:29:35

Sometimes I fail sad

Fleurpepper Wed 08-Mar-23 11:31:36

He didn't make a statement, he asked a question. And Gary is working class- I used to buy my fruit and veg from his stall at the market, sometimes his dad, sometimes himself.

So “ freedom of speech” is fine until you disagree with those using it.

Jaberwok Wed 08-Mar-23 11:35:40

Way back, Brittany was referred to as 'Little Britain' , the main island (s) as Great Britain to differentiate. Geographical and nothing to do with actual greatness in the puffed up sense!

MerylStreep Wed 08-Mar-23 11:36:32

Evette Cooper is only showing she’s like every other politician: two faced.
The Labour Party are between a rock and a hard place with this one. If they tell the truth as to how they really feel they’ve lost the red wall

Blossoming Wed 08-Mar-23 11:36:44

I must disagree with you FannyCornforth. Gary Lineker is allowed to hold his own opinion, the BBC just don’t want him to express it. He’s not wrong though is he? On 13 March 1933, Nazi Germany established a Ministry of Propaganda, appointing Joseph Goebbels as its Minister. Its goals were to establish enemies in the public mind... ...such as Jews, Romani, homosexuals, Bolsheviks, and cultural trends including 'degenerate art'. I always saw Jacob Rees Mogg as Goebbels, but it turns out to be Suella Braverman. The’enemies’ are these dreadful invaders in their viciously armed rubber dinghies.

I am not a supporter of the current immigration Bill as it has been presented.

However, I cannot get excited about a tweet sent by a football pundit, is he lining himself up for a knighthood or a nice safe Labour seat?

No. He’s just a thoroughly decent bloke who says it like it is. My daughter was a history teacher and for years she’s been saying that things the government have been doing for the past decade or so are similar to those of the Weimar Rebublic. At the current time they’re down in the polls and they’re using these poor people in boats to divert peoples attention away from how badly they’re running the country. Forgetting to mention that the whole problem has escalated dramatically on their watch. Oh and they forget to mention that if we were still in the EU we could legally send people back to the first EU country they entered. As it is they plan to send them to Rwanda which is costing a fortune. It’s also imo just part of a plan to take us out of the ECHR. And what I still can’t understand is that the government ministers behind this are mainly the children or grandchildren of people that fled persecution from their own countries.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Mar-23 11:44:03

Just listening to a Jewish man describing how part of the Nazis’ rhetoric was always to use the tern “Rich Jews”

Yesterday Braverman used the term “rich migrants”

Lovetopaint037 Wed 08-Mar-23 11:48:50

The Daily Mail. Always to be relied on to dish right wing rubbish.

Blossoming Wed 08-Mar-23 11:49:20

Migrants have been coming to this country for thousands of years, even before it was a country. We’re all descended from them.

If anyone is interested in what actually happened to German Jews from 1933 onwards, and the UK’s response to it, please read the full article in the link. You will see just how frighteningly accurate Lineker’s comparison is. Interesting to see the article was in the Daily Mail. Plus ça change.

Whilst some might think Britain was always sympathetic to Jewish suffering, there was some initial hostility to Jewish migrants before the war began. Migrants were either deemed ‘bogus asylum seekers’ who had no immediate need to leave their country, or ‘economic migrants’ who were merely migrating to reap the benefits of Britain’s economy. A Daily Mail article from 1938 (with the headline ‘German Jews Pouring into This Country’) illustrates this attitude

I don’t think he’s a thoroughly decent bloke MayBee he accepted over £1 million to report on the World Cup for the Quatari regime. No tweeting on their human rights record was there?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Mar-23 11:54:26

Gary Lineker 💙💛

@GaryLineker
I have never known such love and support in my life than I’m getting this morning (England World Cup goals aside, possibly). I want to thank each and every one of you. It means a lot. I’ll continue to try and speak up for those poor souls that have no voice. Cheers all. 👊🏻

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Mar-23 11:57:48

Blossoming, yes, you aren’t disagreeing with me - I just didn’t express myself clearly! grin

And I agree with everything that he’s said too.

I’ve been aware of the recent (or not so recent ) fascistic creep in Conservative rhetoric.

And it’s not just ‘red meat’.

It’s also angering that that some quarters of the Tories are making political capital from their very own mishandling of immigration for the past 13 years.

maddyone Wed 08-Mar-23 11:57:54

Lineker is a thoroughly decent bloke?
Why then did he lose his principles in Qatar? A state with appalling human rights and which suppresses women! Gay rights in Qatar? How quickly we forget. Lineker is a self serving chaser of money! He will only support people if that support will not cost him money. He went to Qatar for money. That’s how much human rights mean to him!

Well said Jaxjacky. Absolutely true.

Zoejory Wed 08-Mar-23 11:59:30

I can't stand Gary Lineker.

Nothing to do with this Tweet, I just can't stand him

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Mar-23 12:00:32

I agree with everything that you’ve said MayBee, apart from, like JaxJacky, I’m not convinced that Lineker is a thoroughly decent bloke

MawtheMerrier Wed 08-Mar-23 12:05:27

@Fleurpepper he clearly made a statement, and I have no argument with the sentiment. Read it again, “Am I out of order?” was the question.
His “class” origins (whatever that may mean) are supremely irrelevant. They neither validate nor invalidate his opinions.
“Humble market stall lad makes good” is the sort of thing I might expect from the Express or Sun 🤣🤣🤣

AGAA4 Wed 08-Mar-23 12:06:13

The Tories know that by getting rid of migrants by any means possible will be a vote winner. They continually harp on about the cost of keeping them here knowing that it will anger enough people to possibly get them back on track to gain votes.
I think it is stirring up hatred.
Linekar has a point about the similarity to 1930s Germany.

Ooooo where was this FP? He's a distant relative of mine. Don't know how. Mum used to refer to him as 'Cousin Gary' ironically.

MayBee70 Wed 08-Mar-23 12:14:38

Apart from football I only became really aware of Lineker when we went to the football ground at Barcelona and the tour guide said how much they still revere Lineker at the club. It made me pay more attention to him as a person.

That's a rather bigoted look at our devastated poorer areas.

They are the areas where I was born and where members of what's left of my extended family live. That extended family pretty much disowned my father for leaving (he hated the suffocating atmosphere, the prurient neighbours minding everybody's business for them, and the general lack of horizons. I did make an effort to return to my roots with an open mind as I approached retirement but I was shocked to find that I was cold-shouldered as "not one of us" for having abandoned those roots and gone to university. Then they moan all the time that there's no work for the young people.

So I really can't find much affection for such people and their hostility to outsiders. They and their young people are free to go to university and move to the cities. There's nothing wrong with moving where the work is.

Lineker has a point about the similarity to 1930s Germany.

He may well have a point, but what about his views on Qatar? Gay rights? Women’s rights? Human rights?
Basically he’s two faced. He’ll protest when it suits him. If it suits him to take the million plus pounds and be quiet, then he’ll do just that.
