Alastair Campbell has apparently come out in support of GL and raging against the Government.

He did omit that his podcast is produced by a company which GL is the major shareholder.

I quite like Alastair Campbell, but I always have a large pinch of salt ready when he says anything. At least he's transparent about who funds his podcast.

I love watching films and series on Netflix and Prime I think they are great value for money better than watching BBC repeats. Actually a lot of BBC series are shown on them. I believe the public should have a choice who they subscribe to not be forced by threats of legal action to pay for a TV licence.

If there wasn’t a BBC they wouldn’t be able to show their repeats, though, would they? Much as the BBC anger me politically I’d hate to be without the programmes they make eg Life on Earth, Years and Years, The English etc etc Ditto their podcasts.

GG13, because the players and managers had made it clear they would refuse to participate. The PFA - the footballers union - issued several statements to the effect that, as players and managers would be breaching the Leagues’ contracts with the BBC, they would support any who were fined as a result.

The BBC have sensibly chosen not to put players, managers, or themselves in that awkward position.

He's been using Twitter for years for political comments.

But ... but .... Lineker didn't even mention his opinion on detention of migrants! He mentioned the language being used by the Home Secretary in particular and he was right. That's not an opinion - the similarities are provable.

If, and it’s a big if, GL has a contract with the BBC with a clause along the lines of ‘you must not make political statements whilst under contract with the BBC’, then he’s broken that.
As only he and the BBC know the detail of that contract I’m on the fence.
GL is wealthy, he has lucrative contracts elsewhere, with La Liga for one. I think this furore has raised an interesting question on BBC contracts and it’s ramifications may invoke some change.
We’ll watch MOTD as usual as today’s matches aren’t on Sky, apart from the later one.

All BBC employed/self employed presenters have an impartiality clause, this was explained by Naga Munchety (sp) on the news this morning.

I watched BBC Breakfast news this morning and from just after 7am their sports journalist was saying that the BBC had informed the twelve Premier League clubs playing today that they would not be any post match interviews.

I understood that if you can prove that you dont watch live TV you dont have to pay the license, is that not the case?

Yes it's not the law, we arent compelled to pay the license fee if we dont use it.
I do use it so I pay the license fee.

If you don't watch live TV you don't need a TV Licence.

But you still have devices capable of receiving live TV broadcasts. It's them that are licenced. But I think most people, including the government have forgotten that.

You can't pick and choose the Laws of the country. If you want to change it, do it via the ballot box or campaigning. We are not Law Breakers, so we pay our licence, even if we use it for a few weeks a year. Because this is the Law.

I think it's fine for Jewish people to raise concerns, it's not just Baddiel, it's something about devaluing what happened in Germany. He or someone he is retweeting makes an interesting point that in agreeing with 'it's the same as 1930 s Germany' collude with the idea that Jews werent German. I am just trying to think that point through but it's interesting.

I do have some sympathy with this view because "Nazi" and "fascist" are used as general insults for behaviour which is nothing like the way Jews (and others) were treated.

However, in this case, Lineker spoke of the language used and he is absolutely right. There are striking parallels. Jews were "othered" and scapegoated for Germany's economic and political woes and the rhetoric used played a major role. Baddiel must know all this. It must not be allowed to happen again - but to stop it, we need to be aware of the warning signs.
