So you are happy that we are paying nearly £7M a day to keep them in 4 star hotels? We have our own veterans sleeping on the streets, nurses leaving in droves because they are underpaid, the NHS is at breaking point, people choosing between eating and heating etc etc. We do not have the housing or infrastructure for the estimated 80,00 arriving in small boats this year together with the 45,000 last year, a majority of whom come from Albania, a safe country. Wouldn't you want this money better spent? Labour have no better proposal to solve the problem do they?

Gary Lineker's tweet
(1001 Posts)Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

The reason so much of our public infrastructure is falling apart is because the Tories give money away to friends and family (PPE scandals, Michele Mone), and in dividends to shareholders for companies that serve the public.
The Tories drain the country of public money. Council house sell off? Not put back into building houses. PPE scandal? Not spend on serviceable PPE for use during the pandemic.
It's theft from public coffers. No wonder there is no money for veterans, nurses, teachers, refugees. It's in the off-shore pockets of Boris, Rees Mogg et al.

Agree with you completely sundowngirl, this small island is FULL and our infrastructure cannot cope any longer - the other European countries who are taking ‘more’ (as Lineker says) are bigger! I, for one, hope this law comes into effect sooner rather than later.
I thought that, during the pandemic, the government was going to make sure that people sleeping on the streets had a bed. That didn’t last long did it? And there was all that EU money that was going towards the health service. What happened to that, too? Oh and some of the people trying to get here ( on the subject of ex service people) are people who worked for us in Afghanistan as interpreters etc who we just walked away and left. The people in boats are not the ones that are destroying the NHS or failing to help homeless people. That’s falls at the hands of the people that have been in power for the past 12 + years. They’re just being used as scapegoats. And ( and this is just a personal opinion) the government are making a point of taking over hotels in areas where they know the local people will object and it will make the news.

It is not about smaller or bigger. It is as number per 100.000.
So which EU country takes less than the UK per 100.000? Please.

We'd be a lot better off if we got rid of the millionaires in the Tory party. Those that take the most and give the least. Remember our prime minister, whose multimillionaire wife paid no British taxes?

Mrs Sunak paid her taxes in the Country where the money was generated- India.
She did nothing illegal, she has since abandoned her non-dom status.
Lineker is correct! It's a personal tweet. He has not said it on his football programs.
This country has turned into the 1930. Put the blame where it belongs - with the government.
They don't want to solve the small boat/asylum seeker crisis. Its a tool to be used to deflect.
The no had only gone up like it has the past few years since Brexit. We do not have the rights of return or the Dublin agreement anymore.
We are a third country (something the U.K bought to the table) We don't take as many as others. There are no legal passages into the U.K anymore.
An asylum seeker cannot wait around for proper visas when their life is in danger - aimed at Jenrick on Q.T last night which is correct.
Orewell 1984 is alive with this populist government. Quote below is from 1984
"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command"
Fleurpepper - I meant bigger in terms of geographical size and so better-placed to accommodate population growth. And, in answer to your other question - France it would appear, presumably because they turn a blind eye and allow so many of the refugees to get on the small boats and head to the UK!

The French also don’t put these immigrants in hotels with en-suite accommodation and full board. They leave them in tents with no sanitation. No wonder they want to come here

ExperiencedNot Old. I am rather confused by your post . What do you mean by "the ordinary person ,who life will be blighted by the influx of people "?
In what way would their life be blighted ?Sorry I am rather confused.People living alongside hotels full of people, unable to be employed. Having their daughters scared to walk the street in fear of harassment by men that don’t yet understand the ‘rules’ in this country. Not being able to access health care at all due to volume. Have to pay more tax to deal with the totality of the problem. Have Albanian drug gangs blighting their neighbourhood, seeking drugs to children (and yes, this is proven very locally to me). It’s all far from sunshine and roses - can that not be seen and understood?
What I cannot understand is why the largest number of asylum seekers are Albanian. Albania is part of the EU and, although it is not an economically wealthy country, I am not aware that a great many people are persecuted there. If people need to leave a country because of ill-treatment we are surely likely to feel more welcoming? Those from countries where they are not ill-treated are not so welcome.
I have read all the posts and wish i could type as well as many posters here. i have a question for Gagalo. You told us that foreign doctors and a teacher had helped you and your grandson.
How did you know they were foreign. It is impolite to ask someone where they come from because you keep your accent sometimes how ever long you havd lived in a country. People congrstulate themselves for recognising my Aussie accent even though i am as British as they are. Maybe these “foreign” professionals had a foreign name but could be British. Remember Lady Hussey got into trouble for asking yhe question “where are you from?” So
I am really interested to know how you knew those people were foreign. Or did you just guess?
Gary Linekar is a football pundit/presenter - he should stick to what he knows! Don't criticise anything unless you have a better solution!
This was Gary Lineker's tweet:
"There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
"This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the '30s."
Which part of it was wrong?

Albania isn't in the EU.
It makes me quite angry that people who are here because of their families being lucky enough to succeed in settling here, want to pull up the drawbridge. Lineker was absolutely correct. There is a very nasty streak in some parts of our country. People should look at what did happen in the 30s and look at what is happening in some of the countries from which these desperate people are coming, and judge for themselves.
None of it!
Lineker was spot on, so many tory MP's are only here cos their parents were given asylum, how can they not extend that to others? Labour's plan for them to claim asylum in uk in France is great, if they are approved they come over in a real boat, people smugglers won't have a role. Tories are using this as a dead cat strategy, to distract us from the state of the NHS, rivers, education etc which they have trashed whilst emptying the treasury
Good for him.
He speaks the truth.

It’s just the same isn’t it!
I think you are hysterically over reacting, maddyone.
Lineker is talking about the language that allowed that situation to happen.
Can't believe winning the 'Golden Boot' in football makes him a 'somebody'.
Re the question as to why I don't comment on what he said - there are enough opinions here without adding mine, and I don't consider him of any importance to want to do so.
Good for him, it's people not speaking out that lead to such injustices
