Sir Lindsay Hoyle nearly had a meltdown yesterday before he ordered two Alba MPs out of The Commons.
I'm afraid he's not a very commanding Speaker - amiable but not up to the job. He threw out those two but did nothing apart from repeatedly yell "Shut up!" to a Tory on his right.
grandtanteJE65 how many do you have experience of? I have seen many scenes of scuffling and blows traded by politicians in other Parliaments on BBC news and social media.I think our own Parliament is tame compared to that. Even insults traded are nothing like some other countries. Am sure you can find many examples of this on Youtube.
I have always thought that the Tories couldn’t wait to get rid of Bercow who would stand no nonsense and defended parliament so well.
They voted in a patsy who has failed to get to grips with the government playing fast and lose with the rules of parliament. But then, they knew this is how Hoyle would be,
I thought this website was for posting Grandmothers’ problems and frustrations, or even happier events,
Yes it is. We have a problem with our Government, politicians in general and we are frustrated that we can do little about it. Looking forward to happier times when Johnson goes. ?
Disgraceful behaviour from the Speaker. How dare he discriminate those MPs when others were more vocal and ‘naughty’ He bullied them and didn’t chastise others who were far far worse. This is not equality and those MPs were only saying what their constituents sent them to London to do! Yes they were vocal BUT others were also vocal and not removed. Disgraceful and distracting behaviour from a Speaker who lost the plot. - He could have given then all without exception a drug and alcohol test. Now that would interesting.
I would hate to be an MP in that environment. How is it considered acceptable behaviour from adults? Perhaps if shouting wasn't so usual there, the Alba MPs wouldn't have chosen to shout their protest or, if they did, they would clearly have been out of order.
Quite frankly the House of Commons doesn't need a louder-voiced Speaker.
It needs to realise that traditions sometimes need to change and that the bear-garden behaviour of the 17th and 18th centuries should be discontinued.
As far as I have experienced, no other parliament in the world accepts behaviour of this kind from its members.
I used to enjoy listening to the Aussie version of PMQs Rowdy? They often came close to blows and the language was terrible. I can’t seem to find where to listen now. I believe Bercow had a bit of an international fan club and whatever you think if him he did make himself heard as did Betty Boothroyd.
AngelaGran -if you aren’t interested in news or politics, stay off the news and politics threads. You can start a jolly puppies/new grandchild/ anything you like thread, in chat maybe. Enjoy it
It is the MPs who should be criticised, not the Speaker. Betty Boothroyd and Lord Tonypandy yes; Bercow no, not impartial.
Bercow was blatantly biased and bullied staff.
Bring back Guy Fawkes.
The hole shebang needs to be stripped back to basics and some common sense applied.
No second homes for those living/representing close enough, no cheap meals, no cheap drinks. They sound like a load of 15 year olds who have raided the drinks cabinet.
Wouldn't have lasted long in a classroom of difficult children.
He's the one who would have been daft enough to get into the pool with them, then got pulled under. Unfortunately, I have seen it happen by a group of 10 special needs children.
