It’s about the banks for goodness sake. It’s worrying!

So assuming that there is more than enough suspicions relating to Farage, who else have had their accounts closed and why?

It would be more telling if you could provide evidence other than the person whose bank have closed their accounts, as wrong doers are never going to admit to it unless they are banged to rights.

I suspect this is a very large storm in a miniscule teacup.

Do you honestly think the banks are ethical? After everything that happened that lead to the eye wateringly high amount of money given to them by the government so very recently? I’m not under any illusions about banks and how ethical they are.

Banks have a legal obligation to monitor and report illegal activity to the appropriate authorities.

What the banks can’t do is publicise their suspicions/findings.

So all we have is Farage’s word.

And if you trust that one ………… well there is no hope for you!

Banks have absolutely no obligation to take new accounts or to continue with accounts they suspect may be concealing fraud.

The fact that 6 other banks apparently refused him an account is very telling.

To claim it has something to do with promoting Brexit is frankly infantile. Banks are commercial enterprises, they won't turn custom away for frivolous reasons.

OTOH, they are very conscious of their obligation to detect and prevent fraud because it can cost them money if they support fraudulent accounts or fail to adequately protect account holders. They are extremely cautious these days.

PayPal did it with regard to the free speech union.
And Elon musk is beginning to try and control speech on Twitter. I have zero sympathy for those complaining about Elon musk now when they cheered on Twitter's previous control of speech.

Farage's chicanery might well be up there with Hunter Biden's, for all I know. So he highlighted this new method of cancellation. What I'd like to know is why should the retired vicar be cancelled for voicing a reasonable opinion, for all we know this could just be the beginning, an effective way of shutting people up who are deemed to hold dissenting opinions. Is this a world anyone here wants to live in?

I rather suspect though that it is the money from Russia that did for Farage.

Particularly in the current climate, although I think the run up to Brexit needs careful scrutiny, and known Russian interference.

Reading Mumsnet is heartening to read that the majority of the younger generation are angry with this trend by banks, and no, they’re not fans of Nigel Farage.
The quote beginning with first they came for is often quoted on here.
This too applies to all of you stating that it’s the right measure to take.

I don't really know anything about Nigel Farage's financial dealings, I imagine if there is anything dodgy that will be revealed.

Moving on, as noted by Lemsip above, I too read about the retired Vicar Richard Fothergill who had his bank account withdrawn because be voiced a polite OPINION about the content of the promotion of transgender on the company website. Assuming one operates within the law, since when did voicing an opinion become a reason to cancel an individual's bank account where are the Financial Services Authority in all of this? surely there should be some arbitration or recourse to appeal which doesn't seem to be the case. It has also come to light that vocal Brexiteers, have had their accounts closed, (I'm not a Brexiteer) but I defend the right of anyone else to be one, when did an individual's politics become the friggin' business of financial institutions, banks lets not forget the grief they've caused the world! The LGBTQ lobby has infiltrated almost every business and educational institution and woe betide anyone who questions biological facts as they were what seems a nano second ago. Incidentally, given the vitriol that is spat out by some of the minority of hardliners who do threaten opponents of these new orthodoxies with actual bodily harm or seek to ruin businesses that speak out against what appears to have become approved doctrines, have any of those people had their accounts closed???

No, of course the banks don’t like his activities, he campaigned for Brexit and the banks didn’t like Brexit. Do you think the vicar was engaged in money laundering or other illegal activities? The fact that banks can close accounts on anyone they take a dislike to is worrying in my opinion. As I said upthread, love him or loathe him, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what the banks are doing. And after they took huge sums of public money in 2008 after the crash, I feel their behaviour is at best poor, but actually very worrying. It’s not about Farage, it’s about the banks behaviour.

Of course, if his 'activities' are unlawful that's understandable...I suspect they could well prove to be rather more serious than objecting to the promotion of gender ideology.

The retired vicar insists his observations were a polite rebuttal of transgenderism, in response to material on YBS's website. But the building society wrote it has a 'zero tolerance approach to discrimination' and their relationship with the customer had 'irrevocably broken down'. Rev Fothergill said: 'I think they should concentrate their efforts on managing money, instead of promoting LGBT ideology.'

Oh and talking about elites/man of the people, which is one of Farage’s hobby horses - or so he would have you believe.

To open an account with Coutts (that famous working class man of the people bank) as an international account holder, which Farage almost certainly is, you need at a minimum of £3million savings and £1million in investment

I thought Andrew Neil was a very good broadcaster too.
However I’m very concerned about the banks closing people’s accounts because they don’t approve of them or agree with them.
Surely everyone should be entitled to hold their own opinion without such sanctions. The banks weren’t so sanctimonious when they had their hands held out for public money to bail them out, were they?
It doesn’t matter whether you love or hate Nigel Farage, you should be very worried about this development.

The banks are legally bound to take such action.

And very grateful we should all be in the fight against money laundering, tax evasion, PEP, fraud, unexplained activity etc. and so forth.

The person whose bank account is closed down will have acted illegally under U.K. law.

There is no other reason.

If Farage is claiming otherwise - then he isn’t telling the truth.

Oh, knowledge of journalism is it? Again, so what? That has zilch to do with enjoying watching GB News which quite a lot of people do btw.
I think it just annoys people who dislike the programme that it’s now doing well after a shaky start.
