Glad you lot aren't in charge of MI6.
There's a difference between appeasing someone and rattling your sabre. And Truss and co. are sabre rattling.
Good Morning Wednesday 15th July 2026
What colours remind you of your childhood home?
Or was her speech just sabre rattling at Russia? Or was it just a try for the leadership of her party?
I've been looking for insightful articles about her speech at the Lord Mayor of London’s Easter Banquet and so far it's a bit thin on the ground. This from the Independent give an idea of what she was saying.
Glad you lot aren't in charge of MI6.
There's a difference between appeasing someone and rattling your sabre. And Truss and co. are sabre rattling.
Well said Monica ????
She has no choice, while Putin keeps upping the ante.
For 20 years or more the West has been conciliating and kind to Russia, providing havens for oligarchs to launder money and homes for them.
Obama made threats over Syria, but was afraid to follow through, we took little or no action over the assasination in the UK of people Putin did not like, including the Scripols, whi survived an attempted poisoning that killed ant innocent British woman.
Putin has been taken aback at Western response to the Ukraine war. It was not what he expected, the West had begun to discover it had a back bine after all. So now he is threatening nuclear war.
Not just our Foreign Secretary, but the Foreign Secretaries of all the NATO countries and others have got to talk tough, rattle sabres and show that Putin, we have the guts and gumption to respond if he starts preparing for nuclear war.
What is the option, bow down and agree to let him rough shod over every country that escaped from Russian domination in the post war years. If we are scared to respond when he attacks Ukraine, and he is already inching into Moldavia, what chance do the Baltic states have, even though they belong to NATO and the EU and then where? Do you want your grandchildren growing up in a country dominated by Russia?
Liz Trusses 'inflammatory' statements are essential for our security in the short and long term. We are in this mess because we have appeased Russia for so long. He thought he could walk into Ukraine and that the West was too weak and unwilling to oppose him. He is going to keep upping the ante to see if we are likely to back down again. our response has got to be dertmined and threatening.
I too have no confidence in her. She’s not up to that job but then neither are any of them as far as I’m concerned. She’s acting tough but I always think if these politicians had sons or daughters and were told they had to go I somehow think they’d not be so fast . Tony Blair springs to mind for one.
???
Sorry, I fainted there for a minute. But I'm back now.
I agree entirely Casdon. Worryingly, I also agree with volver?.

It’s not the speaking out, it’s how provocative unwise words may be.
Exactly that - and the intention behind them. It may be that strong words are what is needed at a particular moment but I don't have confidence that LT can put the country's needs and that of Ukraine ahead of her personal ambition.

Casdon so a female making a strong statement towards a bullying dictator is a motormouth ?
No. It’s nothing to do with her being female. It’s usually a male trait in fact. It’s usually a sign that the person is out of their depth in their role, and thinks big words and noise will bluff them through.

You don't have to be female to be a motormouth.
Do these people really have no idea how this works?

What Casdon said.

I think they should all learn a bit of diplomacy and not inflame things just to look big.
Do all the things we're going to do, train all the people we're going to train, supply all the planes we're going to supply. But stop acting the big guy about it.
This isn't a playground.
Unfortunately the West is up against a playground bully and they/we have to use words/tactics to confront him.
It’s deeply unpleasant and worrying I agree but so is the prospect of President Putin invading Countries other than Ukraine.
I think that he is mentally capable of doing so, whether or not his forces are currently sufficiently trained and equipped is questionable?
GrannyGravy13
Oh dear, do you think that POTUS, President Macron, Ms Van de Layen et al should also desist from speaking out against President Putin and the Ukrainian situation ?
Or is it just Ms Truss you object to speaking out on behalf of the U.K.?
I think she’s a motormouth GrannyGravy13, who doesn’t consider the implications of the words she uses. Of course we need to confirm our solidarity with the other UN members, but she could well take some lessons from other countries public statements.

For the record I am against boots on the ground from NATO or individual Countries in Ukraine.
I am/would be in favour of a UN (blue beret) peace keeping force.

President Putin only knows strong rhetoric.
Anything else just panders to his over inflated ego and furthers his belief that the West will let him get away with virtually anything.

Liz Truss is simply trying to get the top job. I have no confidence whatsoever in her. Dangerous talk and all that.
I agree. There’s absolutely no need for her to keep making potentially inflammatory statements, it serves no purpose except to make her look foolhardy.

Ukraine has resources that Putin coverts. Putin wants it for its strategic convenience - to easily access Europe bit by bit.
The Ukrainian people are just in his way
He is a paranoid madman.
Who is going to stop him and how?
The Ukraine has been at war with Russia since 2014, it escalated 2 months ago.
I still say Boris has been waiting for his "Churchill" moment and he wont go until he gets it,shame if it means we'll all be blown to kingdom come in the process.
Putin wants Ukraine for its wealth of natural recourses ,war is the only way he can get control of them.
Thankfully for us Bojo and WM dont have to go to war to get Scottish wealth they just have to rely on the unionists to vote for their parties .That way the oil has run for WM since the 70's(and still does) and the exports on their accounts .
He is a mad megalomaniac, and possibly has "roid rage" from taking steroids.
