I fear that ethically we’ll have to cease buying entirely if we delve deeply down the well of many major international companies, and investments too.

I thought people would be interested in this. A graphic from the Ukrainian MP in question listing the companies still trading and paying tax in Russia.

Any guesses about who is missing?

For fairness there are some statements from some of the companies saying what they are doing and how they have actually withdrawn from Russia. I'm just interested in who is not listed...

Sorry to quote myself, but I'm hoping trisher will be along to inform us exactly how M&S go about enforcing the clause I'm sure they will have in the contract. All franchise contracts contain the clause, it's needed to protect the brand.

I can understand why you were moved by the Ukrainian MPs, and did some digging into M&S which convinced you to start this thread.
I have also done some research, and am not convinced that boycotting M&S is on balance either justified, or will be effective.
I think most posting on here are horrified by the carnage they see on our screens, and are doing what they personally and practically can to help towards the humanitarian support for Ukraine.

Rubbish, I will not stop shopping at M&S, nothing to do with being right wing, as for your comment about Mark's giving, having to do something to alleviate guilt to keep us buying there is wrong, they help good causes. When I buy my there they donate to veterans as that is the charity I have chosen.
I also think you have got a cheek asking people not to buy there, we can buy where we want. Most posters have told you you are wrong, never mind every one is out of step accept you.

Glad to hear that you are apologising trisher. Of course all of us here are appalled at what's going on in Ukraine and it sounds like most of us are doing what we can to help. It's absolutely obvious that economic sanctions will help the situation it's just that the one you suggest would contribute nothing to that effort.

OK I'll apologise for listening and caring about the 4 Ukranian MPs who came here to try and gather support from the British public. I'll apologise for believing them. I'll apologise for thinking banks and big companies with huge investments in Russia don't want the economy to fail. But I will ask a question, which is better pressure to bring a war to a quicker conclusion by destroying an economy, or donating to keep the refugees, who will continue to stream from the country for years to come as Putin occupies it section by section?

I also think it’s quite offensive to be told that I don’t care about children dying. I actually care very much, but I realise that the way I can express that care is limited. We have donated and will continue to donate monthly whilst this lasts. I imagine that the greater majority on here have donated but I realise that some are not able to. I shop in M+S because I believe the reasons put forward on this thread by those who are better informed than I am. Thank you volver and others who have explained. I’m proud to shop in M+S given what they are doing, but I’m disappointed because when I bought a beautiful bunch of flowers there today for my mother, I wasn’t asked to add a pound. I hope my local store catches up with this soon.

Whoa! Not only are we being told where we should or shouldn’t shop, with the implication being made that we are happy to contribute to children dying, we’re also being told what our politics are.

No one has said "Nope, I'm going to continue shopping at M&S because I don't give a damn about anyone else", they've researched the facts, verified what's been available to support their choices and made fair minded decisions. No I won't be boycotting M&S. For all the reasons previously outlined in depth on this thread.

I would have more respect for the Ukrainian MPs if they had said even a brief 'thank you' to all the people trying to support their country, sometimes risking their lives to do so. Or maybe I missed it? If so I'll happily retract that.

Where was the condemnation of actual supporters of the Russian invasion - Cuba, North Korea, Syria et al? And those who refuse to condemn Russia and are still supplying them - Pakistan and China, for instance? Or maybe I've missed that too. Instead they chose to lambast M&S and the Red Cross ? ?

It's a weird world where almost every MP under discussion on GN is a sleezy bag of wind who doesn't know the facts and is divorced from reality - unless they come from Ukraine.

The response of the British public to assisting the refugees from the war in Ukraine has been fantastic as has that from British businesses. It's a great shame that our govt hasn't responded as generously and that there are still a few who see a profit motive in the efforts of the businesses.
