Differing opinions on here but surely everyone agrees that avoiding an all out war with Russia is to be avoided at all costs, which makes NS’s comments very stupid indeed.

It’s been widely reported that it’s not going well for Putin so shouldn’t the emphasis be on allowing him to possibly withdraw his troops without totally losing face?

I think Ukraine could make a pledge that it won’t apply to join either NATO or the EU, bearing in mind that Putin’s main fear seems to be the possible advancement eastward of the West.

Everything has to be considered to bring this terrible situation to an end but the absolute top priority must be not to give Mad Vlad any excuse to start a World War, which Sturgeon’s idiotic suggestion certainly would do.

Am I alone in seeing the parallels with PM Blair/POTUS Bush waging an illegal war in Iraq on the premise that they had were producing WMD, and President Putin alleging Ukraine is manufacturing Chemical weapons?

All we’re trying to justify their wars and the massacre of innocent citizens.

I think those allegations were proved. I was watching something the other day where the discussion referred to Iraq and wondered if, sometime in the future, the idea that it was an illegal war would be reassessed.

I think your last sentence begs the question of who/what you support. Is it Putin and dictatorship or Ukraine and democracy? We have seen already that Putin has massacred innocents. Are you suggesting the West and Ukraine are deliberately and brutally killing Russians other than in self-defence?

I am not in any way supporting President Putin, just trying to get inside his head so to speak as to his justification of this invasion.

I really am desperately worried and sad for the population of Ukraine and it’s neighbours, but, and it’s a big but, initiating a NFZ will in many experts opinions accelerate towards WW111. That’s something I cannot condone in any way shape or form.

Fairly obviously Nicola Sturgeon is not "very stupid indeed". As a matter of interest, how have you contributed to the running of your country? In what way can we see that you are so much less "stupid" than Nicola Sturgeon? I can't think why any intelligent person would disagree with the suggestion that the West "keep its mind open to every way in which Ukraine can be helped"

I sincerely doubt that Ukraine will be told by others what it can do. Would England? Would Scotland? I value our democracy and realise that what happens to Ukraine and its democracy will affect us all. Some don't seem to have thought ahead at all.

Not only will all options have to be "seriously considered" but they will go on being seriously consided day by day and hour by hour.

So how would the people who are calling her an idiot answer the question if they were in her position?

Yammy did read the thread right from the first and was one of the first to make a comment yesterday.
If I have not heard a term how can I be expected to know what it means?
I apologise to all Scots Gransnetters for saying they talk in code.
Though do add DH Yammy has never heard it either and we have lived and worked in many places in Britain.

I did think it was funny MaizieD, because it was so transparent that Urmstongran was seeking to stir things up again. It’s not my definition though, that’s what it says in the urban dictionary.

volver I wouldn't expect Sturgeon to comment publicly on a matter that's not devolved to Scotland. We have a UK defence minister and that's who I expect to hear from on the matter of Ukraine.

I think it might be because I said where I come from the equivalent of goady where I come from would be is"It's holding the cats' ar..to the fire". Though of course that is stupid and gross and not at all funny,in some peoples opinions.

I think it a bad idea to involve NATO. GT Britain houses American planes, but they won’t be the target we will, America goes into many countries wars but their country is safe. The fighting retaliation will be nuclear. Russia have already used that vacuum bomb that kills every living person or thing. It is us they will target. People should think if we make a move whats tge next step Putin will take, he is dangerous, mad and ruthless and determined only to win at the expense even of his own people. He’s will have a bunker somewhere.

Oh good grief - she was asked the question in an interview. I know that in England people don't expect politicians to answer questions but that's not how it works in Scotland.

I look forward to your posts calling out any politician, with the possible exception of the defence secretary and the prime minister, who states an opinion - one way or the other - on the issue.

Anyone who knows what "to goad" means can probably work out for themselves what "goady" means.

While we are on the subject, the noun for the activity of deliberately goading people online into responding angrily so that a heated argument follows is apparently "goaderyfuckery", shortened to "gfery". We learn something every day on GN.
