They are scum though. They issued my daughter with an automatic DNR last year via instructions to GPs via the coronavirus act. My beautiful, in her 20s, full of life daughter, because she had a learning disability. Why aren't people FURIOUS with them? Scum fits in my opinion. They couldn't care less about ordinary people or their families.

Uncouth Angela Rayner doing Labour no favours
(519 Posts)Well I'm from a working class background but please Angela Rayner having a go at Raab did herself and Labour no favours.
Yes, all credit to her for getting there, that isn’t disputed.
Just read the papers lemongrove, hard though it is to take that somebody who sounded ‘thick’ as you put it outsmarted the posh boy, she did. What is the UK coming to?
You couldn't see Angela Rayner representing the UK on the world stage if Labour (God forbid) ever got into power, yes The Telegraph got it right she's too common and that's nothing to do with her accent it's just how she presents herself and what comes out of her mouth remember when she called the Tory MP scum lol its just not what is expected of a member of Parliament in my opinion.
All Credit to her, how much harder was it for her to get where she is than the likes of those who were lucky enough to attend the best public schools and universities and who had a much easier ride, always knowing someone who knows someone who can help them on their way up the greasy pole.
It’s refreshing to see real passion and she will know more than most of the rest how hard life can be for those who are not so lucky.

There are dishonest people in all social classes from all backgrounds and education mixes, with and without accents.
Exactly.

The smile and extra courtesy in his reply showed clearly how rattled he was.
Determined to say he was rattled eh?

lemon grove, I’m afraid your comment that accents don’t matter is wrong, as shown by your earlier comment that AR ‘sounded thick’
Ask anyone with a northern accent - we tend to have points knocked off our IQ by those who look down on northeners
I don’t need to ask anyone with a Northern accent....I am one.
Never found it to be a drawback either, but I spoke properly albeit with an accent. Raynor sounded thick because of the way that she spoke not because of any accent.

We do. I'm from the Midlands but have lived down South for many decades. I am judged as soon as I open my mouth and I'm not over sensitive. I have a rhino hide

I like her I like to know where I am with someone I d rather someone was plain speaking and dear oh dear ‘uncouth’ than a snake in the grass with posh vowels and hands in everyone’s pockets whilst pretending to care
The thing is.... unless you subscribe to the idea that all people who are/ were from working class backgrounds are honest upstanding citizens and anyone who can be labelled as posh
Being a snake in the grass, then things are not so clear cut.
She didn’t have the best start in life and yes does come over and a bit rough and ready, that’s all credit to her for speaking in the house. I admire people that don’t let their background determine the rest of their life, does it matter if she’s not polished, she speaks from the heart and seems to know her facts, she shows a bit of naïveté in certain things, but very she will get better. I am not on her side politically but I like her and honestly some of the stuffed shirts we have irritate me.
I find myself in agreement with the Telegraph, must be a first.
Raab was like a wet lettuce and Rayner is a flame haired fury.
If only she wasn't so common.
Who was that who reverted to slang when excited, during the Eighties? Frit, remember? Oh yes, another woman who wouldn't take no for an answer. But she could pass for posh, so that was OK.

Most of us have our regional accents parts of which you never lose or want to. Though you do need to speak especially in parliament so that everyone can understand you, I did think good for you girl you've got him rattled .
Gavin Williamson did have trouble with his Northern accent, and it can hold you back from being natural, it's a bit like having to speak French you have to translate in your head before you say anything . I can remember being very conscious about my northern vowels as a student until some of us were picked up by a posh public school girl and a friend retorted it's a bath, not a baath and an ass, not an arse nothing was ever said or laughed at again.
The smile and extra courtesy in his reply showed clearly how rattled he was.
Neither me or our husband got our education via the traditional route. I left home before I was 18 and had all my children in my late teens/early 20s. My husband was working but I had to claim carers allowance and DLA as one of my children had a disability

Must say that I agree with you there.Raab didn’t look rattled at all, in fact he became extra courteous in answering her.
I don’t know if Raynor always sounds like that or is laying it on with a trowel ( working class people will understand the word pound instead of quid)?
The trouble is....whilst no doubt an intelligent person, her speech made her sound thick. Was she playing to the gallery in hoping that former red wall voters would be watching?
I should think few people other than retirees watch PMQ’s at the best of times. If Labour win the next GE then Raynor ( if still in place) will hold an important position and should try and sound the part.Accents don’t matter two hoots, but speaking properly does.
Copied from Wiki: leaving the school aged 16 after becoming pregnant, and did not obtain any qualifications. She later studied part-time at Stockport College, learning British Sign Language, and gaining an NVQ Level 2 in social care.
After leaving college, Rayner worked for Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as a care worker for a number of years. During this time, she was also elected as a trade union representative for Unison. She was later elected as convenor of Unison North West, becoming the union's most senior official in the region.
I suspect she's no stranger to hard work.
I’ve not seen pmq’s. Angela Radnor was a child cater, her mum has mental health problems. Yes urmstongran, she was pregnant at 15 and left school without qualifications. She’s one of many bright girls who had a tough childhood. She was helped out of poverty and deprivation by a combination of hard work, Sure Start and her union. She had an education with the support of Sure Start and her union.
Good background for a Labour mp. More representative of the electorate than /Johnson and his public school crew
Sorry I dont understand what you mean urmstongran, so if at some point in her life Jane had been in receipt of benefits that would make her less hard working?
I don’t think Angela had much of an education though JaneJudge to be fair. Pregnant at 15y and lived on benefits in a council flat. No comparison with your well earned, hard working ethos.
When she screeched ‘A ‘undred and fifty quid’ yesterday my toes curled.
She’s a passionate lass though, got to give her that. A bruiser - you can tell she enjoys the cut and thrust of PMQ’s!
I really like her. As a working class woman myself with an education that I have worked bloody hard for, married to a working class man who is one of the most skilled in his field in the UK, we have a GUT FULL of people treating us like we are 'common' and 'uncouth' and 'chippy'. Honest working class people with an education and passion have a lot to offer in government and society.

Uncouth means lacking refinement, grace, manners, sophistication, culture.
Oh dear, I appear to be uncouth.
On the other hand I am not lacking in intellect, education, empathy, social conscience, generosity.
