This is exactly what’s wrong. Justice should be universal regardless of what colour you are. Hopefully the judge was not prejuidiced against Chauvin who has the right to appeal.
It was a political sentence any less would have led to riots and further loss of life, second degree murder would normally been much less. The only legacy of the George Floyd affair has been defunding of the police and a rise of crime within in the black community.

How many years would he have got if he had been black.
I would imagine the same. A few years ago an innocent woman was shot and the Somali/American police officer was sentenced to 12 and a half years. Very different circumstances but he was dealt with in a similar way.
I think Chauvin's sentence was lenient. And as for his mother saying he was an innocent man. Words failed me. Mother's love surely can't blind you so much.
Not nearly long enough he’s a murderer and it was a 100 times worse than a close range bullet that would have killed immediately That man suffered for 8 or 9 minutes have you ever stood still or knelt for 9 minutes it seems never ending He squeezed the life out of that man for 9 minutes it wasn’t a whoops ‘my guns gone off’ moment it’s cold blooded murder and a murder the whole world watched It’s disgraceful and America’s whole penal system is a disgrace from the death penalty in some states to this brutality that would have happily passed under the radar if some brave person hadn’t have filmed it And U.K. needs to pull its socks up as we could go down the same route with rogue police officers
Very good point you have made there. The number of rogue police officers does seem to be on the rise.

According to the judge, Peter Cahill, ^ Over the last 10 years, two-thirds of sentences imposed for second-degree murder were within the guideline range, which for Mr. Chauvin was between 10 and a half and 15 years. One in five got stiffer sentences, and 13 percent got lower sentences, he wrote. Of the longer prison sentences, the most common was 20 years.^
In only two cases were both abuse of authority and particular cruelty cited as aggravating factors, and both involved young children as victims and received longer sentences.
People convicted of second-degree murder in Minnesota with no prior offenses would serve 12 and a half years. The maximum he could have been given was 30 years. The judge gave a 26 page document explaining his reasoning. I suggest people read it. Here it is:
Not knowing how this works in USA I was wondering how long he would actually serve. It was a shocking incident to witness but had it not been recorded this, like so many others, will have gone unnoticed. It seems the American police are a force and not a service.
Derek Chauvin will be eligible for supervised release from jail after he has served 15 years of his sentence, minus time already served, under Minnesota law.
Apparently experts are saying he has autism or Asperger and that the sentencing is more what would be given for manslaughter than murder. Don’t suppose he will come to any harm in jail as he will probably be put in solitary to start with and moved to an easier facility once all the publicity has died down. Out in 10 with good behaviour.
