Lilibet Diana Mountbatten- Windsor, born on Friday.
Good choice of names! tcrsmile ?

maddyone Mon 07-Jun-21 10:37:12

I like the name Lili, I think it’s lovely. I also like Diana. Whilst it’s true that it’s none of my business, or anyone else’s come to that, I think Lilibet is a strange choice for a couple who have just rubbished the royal family connection, but appear to be using the connection yet again.
Anyway I hope Lili enjoys long and healthy life. A new baby is always an occasion for joy. I hope Lilibet the first has an opportunity to meet her namesake soon, but I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Well I think they are a beautiful set of names. I just wish the usual suspects would think before they speak.

Ellianne Mon 07-Jun-21 10:45:10

We'll never know and its none of our business....

Hmm I'm not so sure. Never! There's mileage in an Oprah interview there and room for plenty of explanations!

I hope the Queen gets to see baby Lili soon too.

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 10:46:38

I was just in the middle of a post that was going to say "someone will be along in a minute to mention Oprah and interviews"

Saved me the trouble.

Witzend Mon 07-Jun-21 10:54:36

Merlotgran, I am offended on my Philippa’s* behalf! ?
In any case, I’m pretty sure we did have a Queen Philippa, way back in the mediaeval mists of time, so it’s a royal name, too.

*she always hated anyone calling her Pippa, though!

Yes, the Oprah discussion would undoubtedly be better on the other thread!
This is the happy thread purely about the pretty names (IMO) and their provenance.

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 10:58:47

Is it? OK confused

Pippa22 Mon 07-Jun-21 11:03:53

It’s a lovely name but I think again H and M are being totally insensitive. The name is personal to the Queen and they have poached it. Diana as a second name was understandable and predictable. Unfortunate I think that the two brothers have got such similar names for their daughters when there are so many names to choose from Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and Lilibet Diana. Slightly odd I think.

It’s a lovely name, but somehow I thought only the Queen could be called Lilibet. It's her nickname, a childhood pronunciation of Elizabeth..

You only have to check the English BMDs on line to see that there are plenty of Lillibets. The name isn’t unique to HRM. It’s an accepted first name which has been used for years.

A beautiful name and I hope people leave them alone to get on with their lives now.

I would rephrase that myself, Purplepixie and hope that they leave us alone and don't do any more hateful interviews.

But, but...this is the happy thread purely about the pretty names (IMO) and their provenance. confused

There's some that can't help themselves.

dorabelle100 Mon 07-Jun-21 11:15:01

i agree with Fanny Cornforth - it's so wrong for too many reasons to count them - absolute no respect for HM at all .....

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 11:15:30

And again....

Its like a new law of nature.

Bridgeit Mon 07-Jun-21 11:15:38

Announcement: Breaking News : A couple have ‘shock horror’ named their baby with a name which is shared by members of their ancestral family ?
Uhhhm there was me I thinking that this is what many, many families do !

MrsChips Mon 07-Jun-21 11:16:59

How do you find the “Royal Chat thread” as described at the top of this discussion? I didn’t realise there are other places on this group.

GraceQuirrel Mon 07-Jun-21 11:18:33

I hope they asked Ma’am first is all I’m saying.

Newatthis Mon 07-Jun-21 11:18:46

My mum's name was Lili so I hope she grows to be as beautiful in mind and spirit as my mum.

grannygranby Mon 07-Jun-21 11:19:43

I’m with fanny and others - not as a bitch! But just mindful of how important formality and boundaries are to the Queen and how using her pet name is transgressive. Stepping over the mark. I remember how her nanny was sent away never to be spoken of or to again after she wrote a book, a very loving book, about her time with the little princesses which is how Lilibet first came to be known.
The Queen mother was even stricter on the boundaries of public and private, essential for their sanity and survival. The royals won’t be pleased but of course they won’t show it.
It’s a done deal and a little victory to the Sussex's. Everyone will smile.

Not sure what BMD you're looking at, grannytotwins!

2 Births since 1837 and 1 Lilibety.

Altogether, Lilibet has a mention 8 times in Births, Marriages and Deaths in England and Wales.

Crazygran Mon 07-Jun-21 11:21:30

Hope they asked Her Majesty ?
In different circumstances it would be a wonderful choice but so hypocritical now .

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 11:24:22

vegansrock Mon 07-Jun-21 11:25:29

How do you lot who say it’s offensive to Her Maj know what HMs view is? She might be thrilled for all you know. I was thrilled when one of my GDs had my pet name as a middle name I didn’t think it had been poached. I wasn’t consulted either

Jabberwok Mon 07-Jun-21 11:26:51

It's not an ancestral name, it's the name the Queen gave herself because she couldn't pronounce Elizabeth in other words a nickname personal to the Queen and close family members as most nicknames are. Perhaps the Queen thought that they were intending to call baby Elizabeth, but I find it odd to use a personal nickname particularly as the trashing of the close family has been relentless including HM and her parenting skills. Maybe it's for the right reasons? Who knows. Lili is a lovely name, Lilibet? I'm not so sure.

Theoddbird Mon 07-Jun-21 11:31:29

I think it is a beautiful name in honour of two amazing women in Harry's life.
