Lilibet Diana Mountbatten- Windsor, born on Friday.
Good choice of names! tcrsmile ?

The Queens nickname is nothing to do with Princess Margaret, it's common knowledge that the Queen as a toddler couldn't pronounce Elizabeth so turned it into Lilibet and it stuck. I did the same as a toddler turning Lizzie into Lilly, unlike the Queen it didn't stick and was eventually turned back again,

You (and I) can keep saying that, Jabberwok but I realise no- one reads our posts so it's a waste of time

It’s not about the baby or names per se although I realise that is the premise of the thread but H&M again attention seeking and causing speculation as to why Lilibet was chosen when they have both trashed the Queen and the royal family for all the world to see and hear. For a couple who bang on about their privacy it’s farcical Do as I say not as I do springs to mind.

Exactly this ??????

Lovely names..

We are Gransnet, we are international and from many different cultures and beliefs. Our diversity is refreshing and we should all be able to express our opinions without fear of being slapped down, ridiculed for what we say, or chased off the thread by bullying behaviour.

An opinion is never wrong - it's an opinion, not a fact. We should listen to each others opinions without snide comment or sarcasm, we are not in the playground now.

Just saying. I love it on GN and won't leave, but I am often reluctant to post.

I must be naive. I thought the names were well chosen when I heard them.

Memories of the family, even though they find them impossible to live with, for their own reasons. Too much speculation on behalf of the impossible pair.

Obviously names which suit them and make them happy, enough said.

Yammy Mon 07-Jun-21 19:29:05

Does it really matter what they call the new baby who cares?
Yes I am putting the boot in. Sounds to me like a bit of sucking up after they have said a lot of horrible and hurtful things about the royal family when the queen was at her most vulnerable especially if it was used by Prince Philip.
They.ve got Harrison why not go the whole Scandi hog and call her Meghansdaughter.

Anniebach Mon 07-Jun-21 19:24:42

veganrock if you considered those who criticise the Sussex’s
and call the criticism a bitchfest , you have no criticism of the
Oprah tv interview?

vegansrock Mon 07-Jun-21 19:18:27

That’s your opinion * Aveline* - not a fact- was it “ breathtaking cheek” for my DS and DiL to give my pet name as a middle name for one of my GDs? I don’t think so.

How do you find the “Royal Chat thread” as described at the top of this discussion? I didn’t realise there are other places on this group.

the way i get to all these is via the active list.
top of this page, click on active, and it's probably there.
unless the unmentionables have taken over...

You could also look on Last Hour for busy threads.

Or, if you've already posted on a thread, try I'm On

Aveline Mon 07-Jun-21 19:09:38

Canadian gran it's not 'honouring' the Queen to give a baby the Queen's private pet name. It's breathtaking cheek.

Not that anyone cares what I think however..... I understand that the name Lilibet was an identifier for the Queen.

Either H and M are trying to reclaim some kudos by toadying or trying to stir things up further.

As we are not likely to know the circumstances surrounding the choice of name, both thoughts are purely circumstantial.

'You pays yer money and makes yer choice'!

CanadianGran Mon 07-Jun-21 18:18:40

I think it is a nice name. Honouring Great Grandmother, but in a modern way.

vegansrock Mon 07-Jun-21 18:18:24

The bitchfest has got well underway( as predicted)

Alegrias1 Mon 07-Jun-21 18:15:18

I know Ellianne. I have no life.

But at least I don't feel the need to count the number of other people's contributions smile

Ellianne Mon 07-Jun-21 18:10:42

Alegrias at 13.08 you stated, "Its just gossip and I'm really amazed at how long this goes on for."
I'm really amazed that today your comments on this thread are running into double figures, more than anyone else, and now you are suggesting a competition, so you must be keen to perpetuate it.

Anyway, I think it was Princess Margaret. Younger siblings often can't pronounce their elder sister's name, so a nickname comes about which the adults adopt.

Callistemon Mon 07-Jun-21 17:52:31

We know that it was the Queen as she couldn't pronounce Elizabeth as a toddler and her parents and grandparents called her that as a term of affection too.

As I've known that most of my life I wonder where all the other stories came from.

Shall we have a competition?

Who actually first called the Queen Lilibet? So far we've had The Queen Mum, King George VI, Prince Phillip, Princess Margaret and the Queen herself. Any advance on these 5?

Nobody's mentioned Queen Mary yet, so there's an option.

Princess Margaret is my vote. I watch ALL the channel 5 Royal Family programmes at 9pm on a Saturday (work not choice) and that's who Hugo Vickers says ?

I think it is awful and in bad taste. Harry has done nothing but slag off the royal family, and anyway that is the name The Queen Mother and Prince Philip gave to the queen.

halfpint1 Mon 07-Jun-21 17:37:16

I'm sure they gave as much thought to the naming of the baby as we all do for our own, therefore it feels like premeditated mischief to me.

Anniebach Mon 07-Jun-21 17:36:59

But Harry wasn’t kind
