What is wrong with John Lewis?

Carrie Symonds was reportedly appalled at the “John Lewis nightmare” after Theresa May moved out. I have seen pictures of May in the flat and I think it looks absolutely fine. Very British in taste as you would expect.

I nearly always shop in John Lewis for stuff, so do I assume my taste is a nightmare?

Apparently John Betjamin that very British poet remarked that when the end of the world came, he hoped to be in a John Lewis store as nothing unpleasant can ever happen there.

Perhaps that it the point - it is all so bland and British that it becomes a nightmare of boredom?

I have a feeling of dèja vu, the word wallpaper reminded me of something.

Opposition MPs, newspapers and DIY stores have joined forces to attack the Lord Chancellor after he described spending £650,000 of public money on decorating his flat as a "noble cause".

Lord Irvine of Lairg said the investment on his official apartment in the House of Lords would be appreciated by future generations.

Former chancellor Kenneth Clarke said: "He might acknowledge that it was rather unwise to rush into a programme of this kind."^

^The Lord Chancellor's residence at Westminster
Lord Irvine told the Commons Public Administration Committee on Tuesday he had no reason to apologise for spending £59,000 on wallpaper^
"The wallpaper is not like something from a DIY store" he said.

They just don't learn, do they.

It's paid for by us!

John Betjamin was an awful snob Whitewave ? he would likely call on friendly bombs to fall even on Wantage these days, were he still alive.Maybe even on John Lewis stores!
Regards furniture: JL would be fine by me, but I wouldn’t expect it to be the retailer of choice for anyone with real money.
I must say I don’t understand the need to spend mega amounts on the flat at number ten or eleven, because they may only live there for four years.Stamp your own sense of decor etc on it, but why anything more? You can’t take wallpaper with you ( or can you?)

Deedaa

Quite apart from the morality of the whole thing, what sort of idiot spends the best part of 10 grand on a sofa when they've got a small child, a Jack Russell and a bloke who can barely dress himself?

grin grin god that really made me laugh.

Greyduster Thu 29-Apr-21 13:22:39

I think the flat at No 10 should be treated like an army quarter. Marched in with an inventory check, marched out in the same way at the end of the tenancy. Good Lord, after nineteen years of doing just that, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy! Have a heart!?

JaneJudge and MerylStreep
Thank you for the ad!

Actually I am disappointed as I thought this thread would be a whinge fest about John Lewis and was going to vent about their chaotic after sales technical service!

Loislovesstewie Thu 29-Apr-21 13:15:29

Apparently Boris thinks that the public aren't interested in the whole issue of redecorating the flat because they have other things to concern themselves with, apparently we can't think of 2 things at once. I suspect that is how he thinks.

Although John Lewis do a bespoke service don't they which employ people in this country to make soft furnishings and upholstery. They do really nice wallpaper too...oh I have just had a thought...Osborne and Little grin grin

The only positive thing is the company she used employ proper skilled British professionals in trades that have been in danger in previous years.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 29-Apr-21 12:24:49

Thanks for the ad everyone.

It is so good.

John Lewis is middle market. Neither excruciatingly expensive nor dirt cheap.

Why on earth go for a recycled look. when you can do the real recycled look so much more cheaply.

I have a house full of beauiful 19th century furniture, inherited or bought. Brown furniture is highly unfashionable. Carrie could have gone to any aucrion room, including on of many in London and completelly and tastefully refurnished the whole flat for under £1,000. She is meant to be an environmentalist.

Dinahmo Thu 29-Apr-21 12:05:24

Since Johnson has now paid for the stuff, presumably they'll take it away for their new forever home.

Dinahmo Thu 29-Apr-21 12:03:28

It's brilliant (the add)

MerylStreep Thu 29-Apr-21 11:56:31

Is this the spoof add?

Maizie: DH tells me that the government are trying to do away with the Electoral Commission. He heard it on tv yesterday. Have you heard anything about it?

Love John Lewis's tweet :
Time for an interior's refresh ?we pride our Home Design Service for having something for " almost " everyone.
Says a lot .

I just think that a lot of JL furniture is a bit dull and their more modern and attractive furniture is pretty small in scale, because most of us live in smaller properties.
Don't forget that the rooms in Number 10 will be very large and have high ceilings.
I had a big sofa made for the huge living room in our last house because a "normal" sized sofa would have looked out of scale.

Another who agrees with MOnica. Though I’m not planning to move, my new abode has been decorated and carpeted in what some would call bland. It will be enlivened and personalised by soft furnishings and my personal possessions. I’m an army daughter so I know it can be done. It’s a scandalous waste of money and resources to spend so much on a temporary residence. And yes, I too thought she was supposed to be an environmentalist.
The next person already hoping to be the next resident must be eyeing it up with horror, the decor looks to be a rather acquired taste if the photos I’ve seen are correct.

I agree. It is a scandalous waste of money given that Prime Ministers can be in and out in four years.

No. 11 should be decorated in neutral tones (walls, floor) with the current PM able to add their own taste by way of furniture, pictures etc. They can take all of that with them when they leave.

Much like any other short term renter really

Loislovesstewie Thu 29-Apr-21 11:12:07

MaizieD; exactly I am a retired local government officer, and I was not allowed to take a gift from my customers. Often, satisfied customers gave me chocs or flowers and details of these gifts had to be entered in 'the bribe book' and then gifted on. Another rule for some clearly.

Anyone seen the early John Lewis Christmas ad?

It is glorious?????

I can’t do copies some else might be so kind?

Just google spoof John Lewis ad 2021 it’s on UTube.

I know but I wanted to copy it onto here and can’t.

I think one thing that the British public always find difficult to swallow is ostentation. The flat certainly appears to meet that brief.

Boz Thu 29-Apr-21 11:04:14

No Leader should rubbish John Lewis. British Institution and all that. I remember Margaret Thatcher praising M&S; a canny move to make her appeal to the electorate.

Well written and explained, MaizieD, for those who really don't see the issue here.
