She sounds very certain that "the EU will still be world beating with death rates" - yahboo sucks playground chanting - we're better than you, no doubt she will be delighted if that happened and she can add it to other people's pipes. Hopefully with more lockdowns which are similar to the one we've had since December - they will avoid that, and as the vaccine pause has stopped, I am sure they will up their game and avoid British death rates, likewise I am hoping that our possible vaccine pause will not be for long. Lets hope all countries catch up.

I'm not wishing extra deaths on any country I hope they all get their vaccination programmes going and we can all get back to normal life ASAP. I'm just sick and tried of people running down the UK at every opportunity and some who claim they love the UK actually seem delighted that we the UK have a high death rate and can't cope with any criticism of the EU. Some seem to actually hate their own country.

Far from it, let’s own up to mistakes and learn from them. Let’s hope every one catches up with vaccines .

I am sick and tired of the assumption that anyone who criticises our government hates our country. I think the boot is entirely on the other foot. These assumptions are just as insulting as the ones already noted.

I'm watching the country I love degenerate into a second rate banana republic while the Brexiter 'patriots' cheer every downward lurch. And I'm supposed to be supporting every downward move because it's my country? That's fascism...

If you feel critical enough to protest a perceived injustice perpetrated by the government they will now ensure your silence (too noisy) and compliance (too annoying) by the new Bill passing through without a moments glance by the “patriots”.

I didn’t.

The U.K. type of patriotism is different to the USA’s form because in the U.K. it has been attached to concepts like Brexit and now morphing into a non-critical stance of the government. There is no apparent connection with white supremacy.

In the USA patriotism is attached to the concept of white supremacy and far right politics.

Although I like the US and the people there I couldn’t live there, the politics is just so extreme and crazy, in particular there is a large minority of redneck racists.
OK we have a few extremists, they are a small number and we certainly don’t have a patriotism cult, we do have a much fairer society, it’s not perfect, there will always be the have nots. Having travelled to many countries Britain seems amongst the best, and of course migrants would agree, they take massive risks to get here.

I love my country (U.K.) too, but I don't see the Government and my country as being the same thing. One of the things I admire about this country is that we are allowed to criticise the Government of the day without getting into trouble for it.
We are also allowed to protest about things that we don't agree with.
To prevent these protests would be damaging to our country in my opinion.

I can love my country and be patriotic without having to agree with everything that a particular Government of the day is doing.

I can also love my country without having to have an enormous Union flag in my sitting room.

I so agree with previous posters saying that criticism of government is not criticism of country - which is why I have no qualms criticising Drakeford cocking things up in Wales, Johnson in Westminster and when we were still in EU, likewise!

It would be easier to identify the government with the country if we had a government democratically elected by a majority, NOT A MINORITY, of voters.

The Brexit deal signed in December has been thrown into jeopardy because of the recent breakdown of relations with the EU, an influential House of Lords committee is warning.

The European Union committee says “the threat of no deal remains”, with the European parliament now declining to set a date for its vote on the trade agreement sealed on Christmas Eve.

Its chairman, Lord Kinnoull, said there were “noises” coming out of the EU that it might delay ratification beyond the current target of 30 April, risking a further escalation of the row over the deal signed less than three months ago.

The peers’ warnings, in a report to be published on Monday, come just days after Brussels launched legal action against the UK, and the European commission vice-president Maroš Šefčovič accused the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, of displaying a “total misunderstanding” of the Brexit deal.

Fishermen and fishmongers in Cornwall are picking up home trade following Brexit with lobsters and spider crabs seeing a uplift in sales.

And the prices are great too!

Local Cornish fishermen are delighted. The EU market had lessened anyway with restaurants not ordering as much because of covid restrictions.

One fisherman said today:

“People started looking online and discovering that the supermarket production line means that by the time it gets to you the slab isn't fresh,” he said, adding that each morning he’ll pick the best catch for their 4kg boxes of assorted fish, which arrive on doorsteps the next day at a cost of £36.99.

He’s also begun rebranding items with megrim soles that used to be sent to Spain now marketed as “Cornish soles”.

Mr Trebilcock has also rebranded spider crabs - exported in vast numbers to Spain during the eighties - to instead be called the ‘Cornish king crab’.

As for his lobster, the price is at its highest ever, fetching £26 per kilo, where they usually go for £16 or £17 per kilo and he remarked “the restaurants haven’t even opened yet”.

He said the big reason for the boom in the British market is thanks to the public who “got behind it and bought local.”

That is good news for them. I hope the extra local trade will make up for lost business. Did you gather whether or not they were cooking and cleaning the crabs etc?

We started buying these ‘boxes’ last year. Both companies told us exactly what you’ve said. They are making more money by cutting out the middle man.

There’s one company that I’m really impressed with: they use recycled wool as insulation.

The cornish crab industry is benefiting greatly from diversification. Whole families of fishers soon recognised how to enlarge their business with wives and partners preparing and also delivering the catch. More local employment.
You can choose how you want your crab Welshwife but you have to bear in mind weight and portions.
