I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

MaizieD Sun 17-Jan-21 22:18:57

Most of what I have read on this thread is just nonsense purpetrated by people that live in Europe deeply annoyed that it has affected their lives.

What a strange conclusion to have come to.

I'm finding it very hard to believe that you voted Remain, Sunny82z. Why did you do that?

biba70 Sun 17-Jan-21 22:17:42

Of course it was extremely rude, and totally unfair.
Do you live abroadMayBee70, perhaps?

Yes, it is our children, grandchildren, close family and great friends who are affected- massively. and yes, a country we love, which is being taken to the cleaners by a few hugely rich people who truly don't care.

But in a way, you are right. I have fought this as hard as I could- because it is our country, and because of the above.

But for now, despite the fact we will be hit hard financially in in other ways- I am glad we are out of it. and glad our children and grandchildren have a pass out too. But it is hugely sad and disturbing.

A tiny majority of those who voted- and which by now, has been turned around just by demographics- and would never ever stand now as people see the reality. There was a very good reason, that ERG and co never wanted to allow for a second vote on the Deal. Even Rees Mogg admitted this.

But rude, very rude, yes, it is.

Most people who live in EU have family still in the U.K. and are very worried about them but also the country that most of us grew up in. Many people return frequently to visit family and friends.
I read an account today from a man who had a knee replacement in the EU just before Christmas. At his check up this week the surgeon told him he had been given a British made joint but the hospital were finding difficulty ordering more from the company as the company could no longer import into U.K. certain materials from the EU to continue making the joints.
This particular hospital were now looking to source their supplies from another EU country. A great shame that this is more lost business for Britain.

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 22:08:20

I wasn't rude, your comment was ridiculous.

MayBee70 Sun 17-Jan-21 21:58:43

How rude.

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 21:43:54

I am baffled as to who WM are paddyanne? It seems extraordinary that should one voice an opinion with regards to Brexit one is accusded of being a Trump supporter . Most of what I have read on this thread is just nonsense purpetrated by people that live in Europe deeply annoyed that it has affected their lives. To me Brexit was sad and some what unbelievable but that was what the majority voted for and therefore it had to happen. We will make it work.

PippaZ Sun 17-Jan-21 21:20:11

Mr and Mrs Bloggs didn't vote to leave the EU because they were fed a lot of lies they voted to leave because we were constantly being rolled over by Brussels.

That sounds very like the lies and the level of belief we see from Trumps followers. I appreciate that there are those who believe it - although they seem not to be able to put detail on their beliefs - and just like Tumpettes some will always believe it, but that still doesn't make it true.

paddyanne Sun 17-Jan-21 21:16:47

They weren't rolled over by Brussels...they were more than rolled over by WM .Border controls were in WM's power as was more than 90% of rules and regulations....its just that WM didn't use the power they had .Now they've torn up any rule book and are about to wreck lives and businesses ..well apart from the ones they've been throwing billions at during covid.
Britain was the sick man of Europe before it joined ,it will have that title again within months or less.So yea very well done to the people who were conned into voting out .

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 20:50:30

Dinahamo, Mr and Mrs Bloggs didn't vote to leave the EU because they were fed a lot of lies they voted to leave because we were constantly being rolled over by Brussels and now the EU have lost their second biggest economy, careless I think. I campaigned in the 2015 election and huge numbers of people that wouldn't vote Tory if you put them in front of a firing squad said they would because they wanted a referendum and wanted out of Europe and their reasons for that were extremely diverse. So this idea of a lot of ignorant people, voting for something they didn't understand is patronising and for the birds.

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 20:32:30

Not at all MayBee70, I voted remain and it certainly wasn't hell or I wouldn't have done it....Durr. I didn't contribute to the 17.4 million that voted to leave but the other side won and we are where we are and there is nothing stopping you going to live in Europe, loads of Australians and Americans have been doing it for years and lots of people did long before we were part of the EU, my sister for example.

Urmstongran ''I do recall a poster who regularly told us about isotope shortages but has never mentioned it since so I presume that hasn’t happened either? ''

been off GN for a few days, and it is amazing the gems I now find. You do realise that at the time, we were heading for a very likely No Deal, don't you? We do have a Deal now- my goodness it is a thin deal, very much a bad deal full to the brim with problems- many of which were predicted. Partly because Johnson never read the deal, and neither did some of his ministers.

But back to Isotopes - I think we are OK on that front at least for now. But does anyone have any factual information?

Kandinsky- that will be an interesting one for sure. As Projects Fear become, one by one, Projects reality, with many problems now added by this totally ridiculous Deal - then people might turn, big time. Fishermen, farmers, businesses of all types, small, medium and huge, and those workers who voted for better conditions who will end up jobless or with very reduced rights (as projected right now) and will see they have been 'fooled', and see the NHS crumbling the NI farmers and business men and women who lose their livelihoods and their workers too + the tensions rising again between the two communities, etc, etc- I fear there is trouble ahead very sadly.

As Johnson and co are planning right now to 'bleach out' workers' rights, this will create massive tension.

And of course, as far as the EU are concerned, lead to a direct challenge to the level playing field (fishing and now use of banned insecticides too) - and lead to a break up of the Deal and the application of massive tariffs.

So yes, no wonder some now say they do not want to discuss the issues.

I am not very computer savvy, but I wish I could have copied and pasted the 'Brexit voters Certificate' about them having won, and being 100% owners of all the good stuff currently coming out of it. Perhaps someone else can do it, for a well needed laugh.

Kandinsky Sun 17-Jan-21 20:03:13

We’ll never rejoin - not in our lifetime anyway. It took 50 years to get us out! grin

Alegrias1 Sun 17-Jan-21 19:39:47

I'm going to keep pointing out the idiocy of Brexit until the day we go back in. Call that moaning if you like, I really don't care.

Dinahmo Sun 17-Jan-21 18:56:45

I left England back in 2010 before Brexit was on the cards. I think that I can complain about Brexit because I think it is harmful to the country. Although I live in France I am still English and always will be. It's in my DNA. Although right now I'm not proud to be British.

No one on here has complained about Mr & Mrs Joe Bloggs who live in Halifax and not considered ex-pats when they voted. However, I and many others wish that the Bloggs had not listened to all the lies that they were fed.

Actually, leaving the EU hasn't had enormous problems for me and the other Brits that I know. I complained on here about losing my Barclaycard which pissed me off because I found it useful. Obviously there's ways around its loss.

Most of us are retired and so receiving pensions from the UK and all of us will be affected by the poor exchange rate but there's not a lot that we can do about it.

I'm still working for clients in the UK, some of who are doing OK and others are having a hard time. I have complained on here about the treatment of the self employed - specifically those who have fallen through the net.

MayBee70 Sun 17-Jan-21 18:54:40

So pleased to hear that you enjoyed 15 years holidaying in France but are now quite happy to make it difficult for someone like me to do the same. Mind you, it must have been 15 years of hell for you.

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 18:28:57

You are moaning about Brexit and folk that voted for it. I had a holiday home in two different parts of France for some 15 years and I certainly wouldn't want to be there now. You can't live in a continental country and complain bitterly about those that live in the UK and decided they wanted out. I imagine the 2016 vote and us leaving the EU has enormous problems for you but your choice to live there, Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs in Halifax didn't feel the need to consider ex-pats when they voted leave and why should they?

sodapop Sun 17-Jan-21 18:04:41

Dinahmo a French friend was eating with us and complimented my husband on his delicious cabbage. When she asked how he cooked it she was most surprised to hear it wasn't cooked twice to 'prevent wind'.
I agree that generally the French are not fond of vegetables and tend to overcook them.

Dinahmo Sun 17-Jan-21 18:02:34

Sunny82z

Come back Lemon grove. It all makes sense now all the folk that are moaning about Brexit live in Europe. No wonder they are moaning. Tough.

None of us are moaning about life in Europe merely discussing fruit and veg and cooking. I have to say that my life in France is much better than my life in England would be at the moment and I suspect others who live here or other parts of the EU would agree with me.

Greta Sun 17-Jan-21 17:40:37

Nobody is moaning, Sunny82z. People are pointing out difficulties. We actually want to hold this government to account. And we sincerely hope that we won't have to wait too long to 'prosper mightily'. It seems as if many leave voters are offended when we raise issues that are causing difficulties to individuals or whole sections of society. Instead of pointing out real tangible benefits of leaving the EU leave voters resort to calling us 'moaners'.
Please, I really do want to know how my life is going to improve, what new benefits I'll now be able to enjoy. Surely, there must be some. Can you help?

Sunny82z Sun 17-Jan-21 16:59:02

Callistemon Sun 17-Jan-21 16:57:12

I prefer cider vinegar Mamie and I hope it does the job just as well.

GagaJo Sun 17-Jan-21 16:00:37

Good veg here too. Some of the basic veg that I ate more of in the UK is super expensive. Parsnips, a fiver for about 4 medium ones. I think not.

Mamie Sun 17-Jan-21 15:31:44

Thank you Callistemon. I should have made it with this year's aubergine crop. I have a big jar of tamarind and all other ingredients except curry leaves. No malt vinegar here I think but I am sure Normandy apple cider vinegar would do.
Needs must. ?

Callistemon Sun 17-Jan-21 15:20:37

Just for you, Mamie

Mamie Sun 17-Jan-21 14:49:20

It wouldn't be right to think that all us migrants in Europe are desperately missing traditional British food btw. The biggest complaint about M and S in Paris was the lack of curry boxes and my biggest problem has been sourcing brinjal pickle. ?
