The Corbyn/Momentum gang have been threatening to go and take their Union cash with them since Corbyn lost the last election so spectacularly. Discussion, listening to the views of those who don't entirely follow their belief systems, this, they can't or won't do.

Nonferrous: this has been going on in my life for years. We were hounded out of our branch of the Labour Party because we weren’t left wing enough for them (eg Chris Williamson was in our group). I’m just getting tired of it all.

As a lifelong Labour voter it’s really upsetting me to read all the vitriol aimed at Keir Starmer, especially as Labour have now lost 4(?) elections. Why can’t they acknowledge the fact that many people voted Labour in spite of Corbyn, not because of him. He was never honest about, at heart, wanting to leave the EU. We have the worst government in living memory (replacing the second worst one) and yet the left wing of the Labour Party are still fighting with the centrists. The Conservatives are rubbing their hands with glee over all this.

Maybee70, I have great respect for the views you post, but the situation in the Labour party has moved on despite all the publicity and drama of the last few days. It is now about left leaning politics in Britain and if that can be contained within one party or should two political parties be containing the wide expanse of views that is left politics in Britain.

Well, Galaxy, there are is now a solution coming to hand that will allow the right in the Labour Party to have whatever policies they wish and run whatever election campaigns they care to have unencumbered by the left wing that they so despise.

Perhaps biba70 although I very much doubt it. I think a party which really promoted socialist policies (which most people agree with) which stopped trying to take on the Tories by adapting its beliefs and which didn't have people within it working aginst it, would in fact prove more popular than most think on GN. The 2017 election was an example of that. Even with a leader most on GN seem to despise and elements in the party opposed to him they did better than predicted.

Yes, totally agree Anniebach. And that is the case in all countries with some form of proportional representation, where both the left and the right a represented by different factions. But the First Past the Post system in the UK makes that impossible, and there is no way of changing that as the two largest parties will never agree to change.

I wish people who posted negative comments about unions would realise who funds the LP, that without that funding it is not viable, and that some people keep their socialist principles and realise the difference between centrist left policy and Tory-lite policy.

We agree Anniebach. I like very many on the left feel it would be far better if we leave along with the millions of associate members in the trade unions and set up a new independent party.

Blair made mistakes imagine that. The brutal fact is Blair did far more for those in need than corbyn ever did because corbyn was never able to achieve power.
I am not really interested in holding left wing ideas for the sake of them, I am interested in making changes in peoples lives.

Blair did nothing for Labours core supporters in the trade unions who have paid the bills of the Labour Party for over a century, indeed, it can be argued that he made conditions worse for many working people. He introduced the minimum wages but then allowed Zero Hour employment contracts to flourish and with that Gig Economy Terms of Working came into being, which has become a perfect standard practice for many employers.

That said, it is obvious that from reading this thread and similar all across social media that the bridge between left and right in the Labour Party is now broken beyond repair. Therefore there should be a "parting of the ways" and a fresh organisation brought into being under the banner of "Independent Labour" that the left members of the present Labour Party and the associate members in the trade unions can set up, join and maintain. Both camps could then have their choice of support, membership and policies and all argument would be at an end.

What could be better?????

I would be more willing to follow the current direction of the LP if the man who is now its leader had indicated in any way that he had either principles or ethics, but I'm afraid what I see now is someone (much like Blair) who is prepared to bend and waver over what should be real ideals in order to gain power. I don't think anyone who really carries socialist policies at their heart would behave as he has and I don't think he will manage to fool the funders ofthe party like Blair did. He has all he deviousness but none of the charm and charisma.

No one is asking for a right wing narrative, we are asking not to allow a man who was unable to convince the country of his own narrative to dominate the current direction of the labour party.
