Have you seen some of the stuff that social media allow to remain on their sites. They are not the people you want making these decisions.

Just notice this was being picked up while I was (slowly) typing. Sorry if I have repeated or crossed.

I think that extreme hate speech is pretty easy to spot. Have you seen some of the stuff that people post on social media?

Treason against a well established and transparent democracy such as the USA's isn't exactly 'debateable' either.

I know this is a little off piste but it is relevant to how Trump appealed to the people he did in large numbers. If we stand back an look down on the world, it is amazing how many things are happening to speed up changes to how we do what we do. I do wonder if the internet is about to change; it has been mooted very frequently.

By banning Trump it appears governments are quite possibly acting as "editors" and that what they are running could therefore be seen as "publishing" (Matt Hancock commented on Sophie Ridge leaning on his time as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport). They will still have a wrangle working this out but perhaps they may finally find a way of doing so - and taxing these platforms appropriately although, sadly, covid is making countries act more tribally when the taxation of these platforms probably needs to be international.

I'm worried about Avalon. They wanted to rerun this particular Presidential election because of the 'flawed system of voting', though they failed to explain what the flaws are, despite being asked, and now they question who decides what is a lie or conspiracy while repeating a lie which is ludicrously easy to disprove

Ok yes Obama did go but that wasn’t really the main point. The main concern I flagged was social media and freedom of speech. It needs to be regulated properly. Who is to decide who is to be cancelled?

That's why it needs to happen separately from the Trump issue. Those who run Twitter have for a long time allowed very unpleasant behaviour on their site. They should not be in charge of public debate.

The thing that troubles me is who decides it is lies and conspiracies? I would feel much happier if it was a properly constituted body rather than the owners of social media. The downside is the loss of free speech. I don’t see that Trump saying he wasn’t going to the inauguration of Biden incites riots. Obama didn’t go to Trumps. Things are getting very subjective. There has to be more objectivity. The cancel culture is very worrying.

The cancel culture is very worrying.
Really? I find it more worrying that 5 people died, hundreds more were injured, carnage was invoked, guns, knives and bombs were taken into the Capitol by "demonstrators" and their was intent to harm or murder members of congress. All on the encouragement of one man.

Parler has been booted off Amazon, Apple and Google from their platforms for "inciting and encouraging violence" in a span of a little more than 24 hours, leaving them nowhere to go unless they could find a new provider by midnight last night. But of course, this just fuels their belief that "freedom of speech is being denied".

Yes I saw that. Amazon are finishing their contract as well so they will have no platform.

So our right wing will also be voiceless unless they come back onto twitter, but some of them have been banned from twitter as well I think.

It just said on CNN that Trump is regretting putting out the message about healing the nation. No expression of regret about anything else, the man is unbelievable.

Agree tidyskatemum, from what's been discovered, there are several plans in place by Trump's army to wreak as much havoc and carnage as possible. It will be a miracle if they're all found and disarmed in time.

I am seriously concerned about Inauguration Day. I’m sure security will be 1000% better than it was this week but I don’t think we can be confident that every member of the security forces will do their duty and there may well be an assassination atttempt.

It would seem so, MaizieD, according to things I've read over the last few weeks.
What can't be done is pardon offences that haven't yet been committed, but that isn't the case here.

Can the President pardon people for offences that they haven't been charged with and convicted of?

It's a bit like a religious absolution for sins. Can't be legal, surely?

Very concerned that Nancy Pelosi thinks he is capable of a nuclear strike and has advised that the codes are taken from him.
As someone who lives on the route the warheads travel and just miles from the nuclear base I must admit to being scared stiff since he was elected.he is so unstable anything is possible .
We need to get rid of the aging outdated system that is Trident ,there are "incidents" involving it weekly and I'd rather we weren't the new Chernobyl .Do what most countries are and put a ban on nuclear for the sake of the future
