His name was Edward Colston, whitewave and yesm he did make a fortune from the slave trade and Colston Hall was named after him; it's a concert hall and arts venue and is to be renamed because of his association with the slave trade. Of course, it would not have been built were it not for him and it doesn't appear to have put very many well-known people off appearing there.
He endowed schools, churches, alms houses etc in Bristol and Bristol's prosperity was built on the slave trade.
Of course we know better now; however, we cannot undo the past but must learn from it. To eradicate any trace of it means that we cannot learn in the future.
