Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

Callistemon Thu 06-Feb-20 20:21:10

Ageism again!!

Magsymoo Thu 06-Feb-20 20:14:19

Good Lord. I spotted this post yesterday, can't believe it is still raising hackles. We don't need to worry about men judging women on their appearance not their words or actions, when we've got plenty of old biddies to do it for them!

ananimous Thu 06-Feb-20 20:10:34

I think if you would not wear it to court, do not wear it in the HOC.

ananimous Thu 06-Feb-20 20:09:26

We've had three years of MPs trying to thwart democracy and the democratic vote - This woman being one of the most vocal in that dept.

I laughed when I read your post @growstuff

She is really one of the last people I would go to for an unbiased narrative.

Unusually for me, I haven't staggered through the entire thread before posting.
Didn't Tracy B have one ankle in plaster, so reducing her ability to flash an ankle. Phew gives me the vapours just to think about it.

Its amazing this issue has led to 16 pages of outrage and a few attempts to rescue the outrage. My work often involved very formal dress in the morning, followed by crawling round on the floor with small children later in the afternoon. I kept a good jacket in the office, wore long sleeved t shirt type tops and a decent pair of trousers but kept a pair of jeans in the car.
Not impossible. However I do recall a friend being called to Court just as he was loading the van to take a gang of reprobates camping. Off he went in his jeans, walking boots and lumberjack shirt - apologised to the Mags for his attire. "no need to apologise Mr Smith, you don't look very different than usual and thank you so much for attending at short notice".

Lordy, the lady in a rush and injured forgot to stick a cardi on.

SirChenjin Thu 06-Feb-20 18:43:32

Nezumi65 grin By the some of the reactions on this thread you’d have thought so!! Sexual invitation indeed gringrin

Chestnut Thu 06-Feb-20 18:16:48

Nezumi65 Love it! ??

Yennifer Thu 06-Feb-20 18:14:12

Lol people used to fall apart at an ankle or a wrist, all in their heads! x

Galaxy Thu 06-Feb-20 18:13:30

It's not a sexual invitation grin. Honestly.

annep1 Thu 06-Feb-20 18:13:06

I'm not talking about just men.

Nezumi65 Thu 06-Feb-20 18:09:56

Was she pouting and licking her lips slowly as she addressed the HoC as well?

Chestnut Thu 06-Feb-20 17:47:43

MaizieD I'n fascinated to find that an exposed shoulder seems to have become an erogenous zone.
Er, doesn't seem to be....the shoulder IS an erogenous zone!
I was going to mention this because it's probably the reason people find this dress inappropriate for the office or HoC. The action of dropping one side of your dress off the shoulder usually indicates a sexual invitation because you are offering him one of your erogenous zones. Remember all those old movies? The same applies to sliding your dress further up your leg to expose your thigh. ? That's why the dress is inappropriate.

SirChenjin Thu 06-Feb-20 17:47:08

I sincerely hope there was no ankle on display shock How on earth could she have expected to be taken seriously if there had been?? I do hope the men weren’t too distracted by her brazen display of acres of bare flesh.

annep1 Thu 06-Feb-20 17:35:55

As Jolbrook says I wouldn't wear it anywhere.

In my opinion, to which I am entitled without abuse, it's not a good idea to wear something like this when you're trying to talk about something important. Whose eyes and attention wouldn't be drawn to the stupid looking bare shoulder?
I think some people just like arguing.
A particular place I worked in, we were required at short notice to be smartly dressed. We all kept a jacket in the office. Not difficult.

Nezumi65 Thu 06-Feb-20 17:27:41

Ha ha ha ha at a bit of shoulder turning someone into a sexualised object. Was she showing some ankle as well?

SirChenjin Thu 06-Feb-20 17:16:22

The 16th - or thereabouts. The good old days when only the right wing male gentry were in power and women weren’t there flaunting themselves.

MaizieD Thu 06-Feb-20 17:02:53

I'n fascinated to find that an exposed shoulder seems to have become an erogenous zone.

Remind me again what century we're living in...

Callistemon Thu 06-Feb-20 16:56:50

Summerlove look at some of the answers on that thread about the ^worst DIL and you will find little grounds for your inference.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 06-Feb-20 15:39:03

Turned herself into a sexualized object, setting womens' rights back - another idiot MP.

Good Lord! What century do you live in?

Summerlove Thu 06-Feb-20 15:28:59

Turned herself into a sexualized object, setting womens' rights back - another idiot MP.

I think you are mistaken on who exactly has turned her into a sexualized object.

growstuff Thu 06-Feb-20 13:54:05

merlotgran I think your comment about your mother's words of wisdom were silly too.

growstuff Thu 06-Feb-20 13:53:08

Yes, I do know what she was speaking about ananimous. She was speaking about the incident that afternoon when a number of journalists were refused entry to a briefing about Johnson's speech in the morning. As I expect you are aware, other journalists also walked out and the briefing didn't take place. There are issues for accountability of the government and the relationship between the government and the press, if this kind of thing is going to continue.

Tracy Brabin is Shadow Culture Secretary, so this is within her brief and it was her role to raise a point of order in the HoC. She could not have predicted having to be in the HoC in the evening, when she left home to attend the musical event.

I'm always very cynical about conspiracy theories, but it's interesting that there seems to be more interest in a shoulder than something which is looking like part of a pattern to exclude the public from the government's decision making.

mary51 Thu 06-Feb-20 13:40:42

Basically it was just the wrong dress, as simple as that. I am amazed at all the names she was called.

Greymar Thu 06-Feb-20 13:15:05

She's never going to be taken seriously now

What? Because she forgot to ask a friend if she could borrow a jacket ( for example) this person is never going to be able to do her job properly?

Er, no I don't think so.
