Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

Agree on what Callistemon? That showing a shoulder isn’t important in the context of was being discussed? That the attempted challenge to democracy by the Totiesos a far more important issue? That women face all kinds of derogatory, offensive, stupid comments about the way they look to an extent that men simply don’t?

SirChenjin Fri 07-Feb-20 14:41:13

Tories

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 14:42:32

Agree to disagree
Anyone
Plain enough

Magsymoo Fri 07-Feb-20 14:42:37

This 'Jimmy Cranky ' trope is so offensive and blatantly sexist. Women in the public eye suffer this kind of attack and worse constantly. It is a way of silencing women in the public sphere. What is so demoralising is that on this site, used primarily by women, it is just the same. So much for the Sisterhood.

Chewbacca Fri 07-Feb-20 14:44:09

Hmm, I see what you mean SirChenjin, but I'm not sure I'd set much store by that particular post, or it's author! wink

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 14:45:33

Nicola Sturgeon looks just fine
I wish I could wear heels like hers.

Her clothes are bright but I thought that was so that people could see her in a crowd

SirChenjin Fri 07-Feb-20 14:47:57

You’ll need to explain what we’re agreeing to disagree about - because I can’t agree that the sexist, misogynistic language and lack of perspective on here and elsewhere is acceptable in any way, shape or form.

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 14:48:05

so much for Sisterhood

I would not stick up for someone with whom I fundamentally disagreed or who had done something wrong or abhorrent just because she was female.

I don't see any logic in that.

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 14:48:28

She’s not the first poster to use that trope on GN is she?

SirChenjin Fri 07-Feb-20 14:49:40

No I don’t Chewbacca, believe me - but it’s indicative of the type of stupid insult NS receives regularly.

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 14:51:17

Some people think the dress was inappropriate for the place and her position.

Others say it was fine, it wouldn't matter if she turned up in her nightwear.

What is so difficult to understand that we should agree to disagree on that?

SirChenjin Fri 07-Feb-20 14:53:59

Who are these ‘others’ who think it wouldn’t matter if she turned up in her nightwear?

Interesting you didn’t actually reference what most of us who don’t have a problem with a bit of shoulder actually said.

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 15:01:50

Call this thread went far far beyond was the dress appropriate or not and I think you know that. For me it was about some posters allocating a whole range of motives to her quite unreasonably , generalising about her character and suitability to be an MP and so on. There were a huge raft of thoroughly nasty sexist misogynistic and quite frankly stupid comments made. I don’t belong to the camp that thinks the dress was appropriate - but I put the wearing of it in its context( previous engagement, unexpectedly called to the House, in plaster upto her knee )and took into account previous ‘good behaviour’.

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 15:02:46

Crossed posts Sir

ananimous Fri 07-Feb-20 15:08:03

Wee Jimmy Cranky hairstyle does not help NS, imo

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 15:16:02

??????

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 15:18:57

I certainly do know that suziewoozie!!

I have no idea why you and SirChenjin* are attacking me but presumably because others had the sense to leave the thread.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 07-Feb-20 15:19:23

This lady is not a book, she's an MP who should adhere to standards of work dress. Then people would take her seriously and listen to what she says without all this distraction.

I don't feel distracted and take her message very seriously because she has serious things to say. I could care less what she wears. On the other hand I rarely take your post seriously Chestnut and can't even see you. Perhaps you have priorities I just don't share. You may not share mine or hers either put what either of us wear will make any difference to that.

Urmstongran Fri 07-Feb-20 15:21:31

NS is a politician. In fact First Minister for Scotland. She dresses smartly and appropriately for her position.

Her hairstyle should be of no concern as she is not a model.

SirChenjin Fri 07-Feb-20 15:25:27

No-one is attacking you Callistemon - I’m simply disagreeing with you and asking you why you mentioned nightwear as opposed to what had actually been said.

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 15:25:45

It’s not just commenting on the hair style is it? It’s the thoroughly nasty comparison.

suziewoozie Fri 07-Feb-20 15:27:55

Sorry Call but imo you were minimising what this thread actually turned into.

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 15:29:18

It was trisher who mentioned nightwear.

I should have made it clear and mentioned her name if I was replying to her post

ananimous Fri 07-Feb-20 15:32:22

I don't know who is more offended

You, NS, or wee Jimmy?

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 15:32:58

suziewoozie I don't really care what you think about anything having read some of your posts.

However, I do read what most posters have to say and think about their sensible and considered posts even if I don't always agree with them. It's usually good to listen to another view and perhaps re-evaluate.
