Unputdownable.
Every pro-royalist argument is neatly demolished. It shows us what the monarchy really is about: free-loaders; parasites; freebie holidays lovers; hypocrites of the highest order, including the Queen, who by the way has shares in Brighthouse; a firm that exploits the poor in society; the myth that they bring in 'loads of money' proves to be just that, a myth peddled by the Firm.
In fact the annual third of a billion pounds allocated to them (not including security costs which are kept secret-why is that?!) should be rerouted to the ailing NHS, not to the Queen, who is fabuously wealthy. Even their wills remain secret (again-why?)
As head of state she is useless. The institution is undemocratic and riddled with corruption. How can one respect such a family?

They have no place in 21th century Britain

This is a carefully researched exposure of the greed, the cynicism and the general uselessness of Britain’s royalty. It’s quite jaw dropping to read how the British state panders to them, using every mechanism in their armoury to protect and indeed expand the grotesque privilege they enjoy. Norman Baker also exposes the humbug of royals like Prince Charles and his sons who never miss a chance to leap into a chartered jet to swan around the world. His account of the current life of Prince Andrew is partially entertaining; partially enraging. Well worth the 5 stars

Just started this. Should be mandatory for everyone to read it. I know generally what is being said, but the actual facts are amazing ... and we still haven’t moved away from having a royal family, living in absolute luxury, doing very little and expecting us to pay for it all!
Plus we must tug our fore locks, and bow and curtesy.
Eventually it will happen. In our grandchildren’s time?!

What about Meghan? For someone who likes being in the forefront, I'm not sure she'd want to be an Ambassadors wife walking two steps behind her hubby!!!!

Anniebach Mon 06-Jan-20 17:38:09

Why don’t they stay there, couldn’t he be the British ambassador?

merlotgran Mon 06-Jan-20 17:17:30

Apparently they want to take on more work in Canada and have more trips there.

Isn't that what they said about Africa until they pissed everyone off used the tour to promote themselves?

And a second baby is not on the cards hmm due to their packed schedule. grin grin grin grin

Anniebach Mon 06-Jan-20 17:11:34

Their security team must be happy bunnies , six weeks in
Canada .

Jabberwok Mon 06-Jan-20 16:37:14

Unfortunately it seems that way! Hopefully they'll stay away and pay for their own ### security!
A party?!! I'm up for that!!

pinkquartz Mon 06-Jan-20 16:29:00

we do pay loads just on security. many millions of £......I hope it stops and they the H&M stay away from UK
people were posting here saying she would do this. they were right.
M only wants to be Royal enough to take money and privilege.

Anniebach Mon 06-Jan-20 13:12:54

They are having a six week break, must have been exhausting
visiting S.A. And they are struggling emotionally, no one asked Megan if she was ok when pregnant and Harry is distressed by criticism. Sensitive souls .

Callistemon Mon 06-Jan-20 13:07:56

Are they away?
We could go and squat and have a Gransnetters Grand Party!

Jabberwok Mon 06-Jan-20 13:00:38

You're right eazybee ! Apparently that is how these refurbishments were paid for! As you say, pity they can't live there! They clearly have money to burn!!!!

eazybee Mon 06-Jan-20 10:52:55

I don't think the taxpayers did contribute; I believe all the money came from the Sovereign Grant and the Sussexes themselves.
Just a pity they can't be bothered to live in it.

merlotgran Mon 06-Jan-20 10:35:41

I thought the taxpayer contributed a couple of £million.

Jabberwok Mon 06-Jan-20 10:31:20

You're right, Frogmore is part of the Crown Estate. However, the Queen did pay for the repairs out of the sovereign grant. Generous Granny!!!

Grany Mon 06-Jan-20 09:36:16

The Royals are coining it in from every direction plus freebies and free holidays and travel expenses and security.
The firm are have loads of money.

@SkyNews
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have trademarked their brand "Sussex Royal", prompting speculation they may roll out branded products

@Caeso_K

It's standard practice for the foundations. The Cambridges registered theirs in June within days of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and yet, no mention by the British press. Beware the spin.

The Queen owns Amner Hall, she doesn’t own Frogmore,

They should have stayed in Kensington Palace, they were hardly going to meet getting in the morning milk.

I thought Eugenie’s husband was wealthy, even if not it’s wrong they are living in Kensington Palace.

Difficult being a Grannie though.

merlotgran Sun 05-Jan-20 17:08:57

William and Kate will have a lot on their shoulders when the Queen dies. Charles and Camilla are no spring chickens and Harry is proving to be no support at all.

I hope they are enjoying every family moment they can while the going's good.

grannymy Sun 05-Jan-20 17:05:46

I'm not a Royalist, but do think the Queen has done a grand job and I like the young Royals. We will never have the money, pomp and circumstance that they have, but who wants to live in a goldfish bowl anyway?

merlotgran Sun 05-Jan-20 16:50:24

Eugenie and her husband are also living at Kensington Palace in one of the so called cottages. Shouldn't they be buying their own home? Eugenie is a minor royal who married a commoner.

merlotgran Sun 05-Jan-20 16:47:49

I suppose because the Queen gave William and Kate Amner Hall as their country retreat, she wanted to do the same for H&M but it begs the question, who is going to take up residence in the KP apartment once the Gloucesters move out?

Millions are spent on these residences. hmm

endlessstrife Sun 05-Jan-20 15:44:10

I wouldn’t be them for all the money on earth. Watching “ The Crown”, has cast away any delusions on that score.

Jabberwok Sun 05-Jan-20 15:32:32

I know Annie! That's why its seems so peculiar! I suppose H and/or perhaps M (?!) didn't want to be in the same vicinity as the in laws!

Anniebach Sun 05-Jan-20 14:44:19

Kensington Palace isn’t a block of council flats, living next door doesn’t mean having to ask neighbours to turn the tv down.

Jabberwok Sun 05-Jan-20 14:25:41

Harry and Meghan( ?!!) apparently didn't want to live next door to William and family so decided not to take up occupancy in Kensington Palace!!!
The Queen paid for Frogmore out of the privy purse, money that is allotted to her. I can think of better ways of spending her allowance, but I suppose it was up to her!!

NotTooOld Sun 05-Jan-20 14:08:01

Anniebach is right about Harry's Ken Pal apartment which we paid to have done up for him. Then he (or was it M?) decides they don't like it and we pay for another place to be done up.

annep1 Sun 05-Jan-20 13:16:30

Anniebach you do make me laugh.

Anniebach Sun 05-Jan-20 11:50:27

The queen has two official residences. Charles has one, William has one. What is so wrong is the apartments in
St.James Palace. And Harry turning down a large apartment in Kensington Palace to live out of London then having an
apartment in Buck House when they are in London.
