And his production of The Mikado at the English Opera (if you were lucky enough to see it).

Alzheimers! How cruel that such a great mind and intelligence should crumble before his own eyes.

As opera buffs, we remember mostly what a brilliant director he was, ripping operas from their settings and representing them totally anew. I will never forget his modern production of Rigoletto, setting the opera in New York's mob-controlled Little Italy in the 1950's instead of 16th century Italy.

Entertaining, articulate, humorous, so very intelligent. I once saw him interviewed on American TV talking, among other things, about how he overcame a serious stammer. Listening to him you would never have thought he had a problem!

Another very clever man and so sad that he had Alzheimers. RIP.
