But we are talking about the massive hypocrisy that 'free speech' when talking about some religious communities, is totally unacceptable- whereas the same free speech, talking about other religious communities, if fair and dandy.

I know several women, through the work I have now retired from who wore burkhas.
They chose to wear them, there was no coersion, no grooming. These were highly educated, wonderful women who made a choice.

When I had known them for a few years, and had developed a close and friendly relationship, I did ask them why they wore them (i had seen them all without burkhas on numerous occasions in private).
They felt it was liberating. Simple as that.
They never had to worry about how they looked, just how they acted.
No concerns about how their hair looked, just what they had to say.

These women were the most loving, giving, highly educated and wonderful people. To her them being denigrated as nothing more than 'letter boxes' disgusts me.

I've never really understood why a garment which is all-encompassing and worn mainly in hot countries should be made of black material.
Black absorbs heat, white reflects it. I thought that was why some people in the Middle East sensibly wear white robes.

The Jewish women who cover their hair with other hair do not cover their faces as well, do they? In which case, their wigs are just another kind of hat. Until recently nearly everyone wore a hat, often indoors as well as outdoors.

Why is there no comparison between a 'garment' made of a large amount of black fabric and a garment made of a large amount of, say, khaki fabric? That's all I'm comparing.

Being a well-educated person (someone who knows how to find out, rather than someone who knows), I did some looking up and found that I had heard previously about ultra orthodox Jewish women wearing wigs because of a rule about covering their hair. I don't recall hearing about the two fridges thing but I expect it's to do with keeping different kinds of food separate, which, while I may not feel that need, would seem to be based on some practical ideas about the food in question.

However, jura, your scathingness about my knowledge is just a deflection. Have you come up with an answer to my query about the practicalness of the burka?

Would you feel sick to your stomach if I spoke in such terms (sack-like, for example) of, say, a voluminous overcoat? I doubt it.

You are correct, jura. I don't know much anything about Jewism. I've never even come across that word before.

The people I know who are or were wig-wearers wore them for practical reasons so my comments were based on my experience.

All well-educated people know nothing about all sorts of things.

But surely it is not for BJ to be telling Muslim women that a garment of clothing " is oppressive".
Actually, I think it is a good idea for those in power to speak out for women who may be being coerced by their menfolk into wearing such garments.
If they choose to wear such garments then so be it, it is up to them. But not all wear them through choice.
