Everyone who votes Tory wants to pay less in taxes and thereby accepts making poor people poorer. Helping at local food banks is just rank hypocrisy and designed to help them sleep better.

Never mind allowing actually policy making for it!

Amber Rudd on more than £140K dares to pontificate about food insecurity (food poverty) without doing anything meaningful to eradicate it.

Disgraceful situation in our rich country and disgraceful government for not only not solving the problem of poverty but actually allowing it to increase!

You’ll have to forgive my continuing cynicism. When there’s a grass roots Tory based anti UC movement demonstrating outside the DWP, I’ll believe Tory voters care. Until then, they are at best salving their consciences and at worst setting themselves up to continue to garner votes.

grannya similar political situation here where I am and same joke too! And indeed both our large supermarkets have Food Bank collection points and on our community board FB page there is a regular Food Bank update when they need particular items. This is in a town where the average house price is around £620k.

As you say grannya it is easy to think there is not poverty on the doorstep.

At the local school where I am a governor there has been an upward trend of numbers of children who attract additional funding due to low income. Also there has been an increase in families being rehoused into towns further south (Hants) where social housing rental is cheaper.

Sorry, I meant also to say that I'm sure there are many Gransnetters on here who do believe there's a problem, but sometimes when people are politically polarised it becomes hard to tease out the nuances involved in critiquing particular policies.

maryeliza I think your statement (above) perhaps depends on how you define 'right winger'. I live in a town that is politically dominated by the conservatives, so much so that locally the joke is repeated, even by them, that if you were to put a blue rosette on a pig it would win the seat for the conservative party. However, it most definitely is not true to say that they don't think there is a problem, because in my town they most certainly do. Indeed many local Tories actively support the Food Bank both through donations and by volunteering and are quite vocal in castigating a system where such places are necessary. I see and hear them expressing real anger at this government's seemingly callous attitude to people who are in need due to cutbacks and the introduction of Universal Credit.

What I can't get my head around is that these kindhearted people still continue to vote in the way they do.

If she acts the way with the food crisis the same as she did with Windrush, then she'll completely ignore the situation.

In addition to the problems with the roll out, the iniquitious sanctions system is also responsible. Still I expect someone will be along soon to explain how it’s all JC’s fault. What we won’t get is one right wing GNer who thinks there’s a problem.

It makes my blood boil when I see politicians standing ,grinning inanely in a food bank .Its as if they all believe food banks are GOOD things and they are special because its their fault so many exist.If theres a god ,then please can he save us from these eegits?
