I've posted a brief summary from an article in today's Guardian, on the problems in the Wavetree constituency where the MP is Luciana Berger. (written by Nazia Parveen and Peter Walker) :-
- no confidence motion withdrawn and a meeting to discuss her future cancelled after it emerged one of her key local party opponents called her a "disruptive Zionist"
- the decision was made by the Liverpool Wavertree party after a day of considerable pressure from the central party and the Labour leader's office.
- Tom Watson wrote to Jennie Formby (general secretary of the LP) asking her to suspend Liverpool Wavertree party. He said "it is clear to me that Luciana Berger is being bullied. This behaviour by her local party is intolerable. The actions of her constituency are not only threatening to Luciana personally but are bringing our party into disrepute"
- Local party members said evidence of antisemitism had undermined what some viewed as legitimate criticism of Berger. One member said that Kenneth Campbell a local critic who wrote on facebook that she should be "exposed for the disruptive Zionist she is". .....
- It has since emerged that Campbell 80, who jointly tabled a second motion to oust Berger with his wife, Agnes, also shared a Facebook post that called the Jewish Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge 'utterly shameless' and has written posts which allude to the media being controlled by "zionist masters".
The criticisms of Luciana Berger that seem to focus on concerns that "instead of fighting for a Labour government, our MP is continually using the media to criticise the man we all want to be our Prime Minister". That's what the motion said but it's been totally undermined by anti semitism and as Tom Watson states bullying of a sitting MP.
This as a time, when the country needs a strong opposition, when we are facing what seems to be the greatest challenge for our country since WW2
