What you say is true about Blair - who can forget what Mandelson said about being relaxed about people becoming 'filthy rich' Mal - however, middle of the road Labour could, I think, be elected as long as they have learned the lessons from this.

Why do we have austerity, presumably because someone spent all the money, or we suddenly got lots more people to provide for, I don't know I am hopeless on the political side of things. Nicenanny I think the 4 million did get a lot of mention at the time of the Referendum and thats why a lot of people voted the way they did. Seven months to go I don't see how TM can go now, who else wants to be dropped in it at this point, later maybe. My local MP is a good Constituency MP so I guess thats how I will vote, no idea otherwise.

I thought you meant Colleen Nolan for a minute. What choice is there... I couldn't vote for Jeremy Corbyn, and Teresa May and her merry mob are a waste of space. I think Gransnet should form a party, there is more sense on here than I have ever heard from Parliament.

Alternatives? Hmm can you just imagine Boris at this end, and Trump over the pond? They even look alike!

In Scotland we have an alternative way forward. If sufficient people can find the courage to take the leap in the dark, Scotland could be an Independent Nation, with probably a slightly left of centre Government. In the Scottish Parliament (elected under a part FPTP, part PR system, we have 4 main parties and room for a few Independents, such that there has to be a measure of co-operation in order to pass legislation.

To my mind this is a better system than the 'winner takes all' set up at Westminster, where MPs from minority parties have little chance of influencing policies or votes. (Except at the moment when the DUP can demand and get whatever they want). I agree with those who say that this is a National Crisis and we should have a Unity Government for the duration of the Emergency. The present set up is not conducive to co-operation between the parties, who are more concerned about their chances in a future GE than the urgent matters of the day.

BTW when people speak of the 3 main parties at Westminster, I presume they mean Con, Lab & Lib, when the reality is that the SNP is the 3rd largest party in the house of commons.

Oh it's not the fact that we now have nearly 4 million EU citizens here and who knows how many from other countries legal or illegal. No one ever mentions this do they, they all need somewhere to live hence property prices rising and shortage of housing stock. They all need health care, hence delays in GP and hospitals appointments. Their children need school places making it harder for you to get your child in the school of your choice. They all need transport, more cars on the roads and pollution the list goes on.

I think Corbyn has been pilloried for far too long. He’s a breath of fresh air in politics, and frankly I think he’s our only hope.
It seems to have become fashionable to say that he is not credible as a leader, but I have seen no evidence to support that, unless you believe the terrible untruths peddled in the Daily Heil.
They would have Corbyn as a Communist, a terrorist sympathiser, and a fiscal incompetent, whereas he is none of those things. Neither is he antiSemitic, although the zeitgeist would have him so.
The plain fact is that he could never be as bad as Tweeza and her Nazi cronies, so he’s ‘worth a punt’ as gamblers say.
Personally, I wouldn’t care if the Purple Panty Pooper Party got into power, so long as we are freed from the horrors of this present ghastly Tory administration.

The reason that we don't have enough teachers, police or medical staff is tory cut backs, Nothing to do with the EU.

And we don't have an 'open door'policy on immigration. Immigration from non EU countries is strictly controlled. Freedom of Movement for EU workers is a different thing altogether. Brexit is severely curtailing that anyway; Europeans seem to no longer want to come to work in our closed minded and unwelcoming country. Numbers coming to the UK are well down since 2016 and many vital EU staff, such as NHS professionals (i.e doctors and nurses have already left or are planning to go. Taking their contribution to the UK economy with them...

The expression 'Brexit is what the people voted for' still annoys me. Only just over half did and did we all really have enough knowledge to know all the problems involved. I really do wonder what the result would be now if there was another referendum.

Far too many people have been allowed into the country due to Labour's open door policy and so it's stretched the country's resources to the limit. This is the biggest change for the UK since the second war. Everyone has their own idea of what is best for the country and all the fighting on social media doesn't help. I wish Boris Johnson, George Osbourne and all the has been politians were banned from working as journalists for at least five years. They just upset people The current Leader of the Opposition has sided with every enemy of the UK since he was first elected, but people will continue to vote for him and his colleagues. His chances of being the next PM are pretty good.

We are one of the very few countries in the world where people expect health and education to be completely free for all at the point of need. At our age, there is an assumption that older persons care, including care homes should also be free at need. I'm always coming across people who think the responsibility for themselves and their families begins and ends with a Conservative Government. When pressed on where the money should come from. they start talking about the Royal Family or Trident. Yet immigrants flock to this country legally or illegally and say they believe that life is better for them and their children than the place of their birth. They think the moaning of the native Brits is astonishing.

Maizie D, sorry for any confusion. Two separate issues here. I said the government are so used to having decisions made for them, they no longer know how to govern. This applies to all parties.

Then I spoke about austerity and how this government are so short sighted that they can't see the long term damage with these principles, both in moral and the long term economy. Nothing there related to the eu.

Re women and the pension age hike, one unintended consequence is of course that women won't be there to care for elderly parents any longer, hence the need for proper provision for an increasingly elderly population. In trying to save money on the one hand, HMG is foist with its own petard. Hah!

While I agree 100% with you on the utter stupidity of 'austerity' policies I would point out that they have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE EU

I would like to add that they refuse to do a rethink on the pension age hike. It needs reorganising more fairly so that a woman born the day after her friend doesn't have to carry on working for several months all for the sake of a day. They forget that older women also usually have grandchildren and elderly relatives to look after,

Don’t forget the chaos our Prisons and Police Forces are undergoing .... less criminals are being sent to Prison because of overcrowding so they are still on our streets ... less Police available when we need them ... the scary thing tho is that there is absolutely no one who fills you with any confidence to replace May.

I know nothing about politics and don't pretend to and I'm certainly not well educated like most of you on here seem to be. But you don't have to be a genius to realise that any government chosen to run our country hasn't got a clue how to do it. They are so used to abiding by EU rules and just being puppet heads, doing what they are told by Brussels, that they no longer have the capability to do the job they are being over paid to do. Sometimes I wonder if they are being paid to destroy our fantastic country, bit by bit, by our enemy. Nothing would surprise me anymore. Surely they realise by now that cut backs and keeping the poorest short of money is going to have such a back lash soon. When people have money to spend it keeps the economy moving. By keeping the people who spend most , short of money, the economy will stop, to the detriment of us all. How much more can we put up with before we do as other countries do and rebel?
