MaizieD I remember that there were no toilet rolls in the shops; it must have been before 1979 because my sister was working for a transport company and she said that the warehouse was full of toilet rolls but they were not allowed to deliver them. We concluded it was an artificial shortage in order to push up the prices - which is what happened when they appeared in the shops again.

They won't have far to go to refuel: Dunkirk.

But the French might not let them into their terminals because the captains don't have EU recognised qualifications...and the fuel pipe connections might not conform to EU safety standards any more... Everything EU related ceases on B-day, you know...

I must remind DH to check the generator is in good working order.

We had all sorts of shortages in the 70s as I recall; mostly silly panic buying really - a rumour was started and woosh...shelves empty...

Anyway, to be serious for a moment, why is May issuing these 'technical leaflets' in Aug/September to tell us how to prepare for a no deal Brexit?

I'm going to stockpile rolls of tin foil. I'll make lots of little made to measure hats to sell at the market. Suspect there will be a rush on them shortly.

Mrs May has announced today that “technical” leaflets are going to be issued to businesses and households in the event of a no deal. These are due out in August, September and October. They are going to advise people what they need to do to prepare, particularly people with long term medical issues. Admiting that there will be shortages on the shelves. Apparently fresh fruit and veg is in shorter supply than usual, partly due to very dry weather, but partly because of a lack of pickers who have either left the UK, or not come for the season. When ports and airports come to a standstill- you might, just might, not find it funny at all.

They used to send us food parcels in WW2 - if anyone was lucky enough to have rellies over there.

Well, the major supermarket chains are stating that "shortages" of some perishable products could start within 24-36 hours if Just in time schedules (JIT) suddenly come to an end.

There was a program on Channel 4 last night that I only caught part of that was reporting from Immingham I think. Trucks move through the roll on roll off system there at the rate of one every forty seconds to and from the Continent.

The port management advised that if delays start of more than 15 minutes to those trucks, then the whole port would come to a standstill within an hour.

The management also advised that their own staff are now asking about the future of their jobs, but as a management, they cannot tell them anything as they have been told little themselves.

Not a great prospect, so, start stockpiling.
