Your daughter is right. Plenty of Psychology research on it going back years and all replicated showing it to be an enduring trait in human nature. Even down to distancing from innocent victims of disasters, wars or whatever. The theory is once we see them as "not like us" then we can think what is happening to them won't happen to us. It goes further, if people are innocent victims, there is a tendency to "blame" them for their condition somehow. Just mildly. So that again, we can think it won't happen to us because we won't do what they did.
As for the Trump phenomenon, I am just completely speechless. I was looking for a particular matter on youtube a day or two ago and came across a lot of otherwise apparently decent caring people from the States all saying how good he is for their country. I have become very depressed lately. I'm afraid that the Clintons did a lot of very wicked things too.
