I don't know the statistics on acid attacks but eloethan is right to say these attacks have traditionally been more common within the Asian countries. As in those countries, such attacks historically been more likely to occur in the contact of so called honour/ family feuds.
In recent years, acid attacks have happened when a spurned boyfriend of whatever creed or colour has attacked a former partner.
Radio 4 news interviewed gang members, again all creeds and colours about the increase in gang related acid attacks. The gang members explained if they were found to be carrying a knife, they'd get a serous sentence, It seems the law currently has little response to those found carrying acid because it has legal purpose. In addition, acid attacks are less dangerous to the perpetrator than knowing fe attacks, you don't have to get up close to do significant danage.
Just beyond awful isn't it.

"In the recent acid attack in Beckton, East London, Jameel Muhktar and his cousin Resham Khan were left with life-changing injuries when a man threw acid through their car window as they sat in traffic. Although treated as a hate crime, Muhktar suggested that had the perpetrator been Asian and the victims an English couple, it would be classed as a terror attack."

Grievous bodily harm is a serious offence which I assume can carry a high prison sentence but I'm not sure what the maximum is. I'm not a great believer in prison but in cases of extreme violence I think sentences should be lengthy.

Incitement to murder needs to be punished to dissuade others from this type of behaviour.

Well acid attacks per se could be terroist attacks - the question is whether a specific attack is. The one on the two cousins we don't know about yet do we in terms of motivation - haven't they just arrested someone?

With regard to the viscount who is likely to get a prison sentence, why is he castigated as someone whose crime was racist, yet acid attacks on Muslims, of which there have been over 80 in the last year, are not classed as terrorism, just grievous bodily harm?

I was only sharing my trip because, for me, it is exciting to participate politically. I don't get the chance to talk to MPs regularly, so for me it was a big deal to go to a meeting with some of them there. I can see I was naive in doing that.

Is anyone else here politically active locally/regionally? Or is it just online forums like this one?

primrose You refer to "trivial" issues but the triviality emanates from those with whom you agree. Since you were so keen to tell people you are off to Portcullis House to meet some "real politicians", perhaps you would like to enlighten us as to who they are.

The state of Seamus Milne's marriage is nothing to do with anybody except his wife and family. Had he been prominent in passing judgment on the sexual behaviour of others, then perhaps it would be natural that he be criticised but, as far as I'm aware, he confines himself to political issues. There must on this site alone be hundreds of people who view or post on it, who have had extra-marital affairs or who are in their second or third marriages. Who has the right to pass judgment on them? Nobody, in my opinion.

Is it really being suggested that someone who has an affair should lose his or her job or be ostracised? If that were to be the case, I would imagine a fair percentage of people would find themselves unemployed and shunned by the "righteous".

I think there is a world of difference between swearing about something or someone and swearing at someone. But it seems because Jess Phillips is vehemently anti-Corbyn, it was seen as rather amusing for her to tell a left winger to "fuck off". I also think that, whilst continual swearing can be off-putting, there are far worse things that a person can do.

I know people of very modest means and education who I would consider are decent and respectful of others - what might be described as "well mannered". In fact I have a fairly ordinary background myself and would like to think I am generally quite good mannered. It has nothing whatsoever to do with class, employment status, money - or lineage (as Rigby's post re the Viscount so clearly demonstrates). In the grand scheme of things, however, charm and impeccable manners can be fairly superficial social devices and do not necessarily indicate a genuine care and respect for other human beings.

Wow - just found out what aristocratic good breeding means - posting malicious communications on fb - well done the 4th Viscount ST Davids.

Not sure what's meant by the Humpty Dumpty approach in this context - no one was manipulating the meaning of anything....Perhaps there should be a separate thread where people can discuss words and phrases, whether they are appropriate or not etc. It's not the most pressing issue in politics imo.
