Living with the Trump presidency

Impeachment is a complicated business and it can't be done because you don't like a person's politics. They have to commit a serious offense, like Bill! even then they usually wriggle out of it as he did! In any case, you'd end up with Mike Pence, who is marginally more scary. I don't think even you dj can believe that he too would incur another impeachment! I think that would seem a tad careless or vindictive! In any case there would be yet another Republican to take his place exactly like there is here until the next election has to be called. It's called democracy!!

We need sensible government which doesn't take the absolutely opposite route to the one preceding it and doesn't just swing to the other extreme. Yoyo decisions do no good to anyone.

America is a mature democracy which rests on the rule of law and which has institutions and processes which provide checks and balances as well as a freer press than our own - which is more than you can say for the assortment of rebel held, terrorist controlled, failed-state, torture and murder-employing basket case states whose members he has put a temporary stay on.

I think Donald Trump leaves a lot to be desired as a person and as a president but he will soon find the limits of his power. Indeed, his banning order has twice been challenged in the courts in a matter of days which shows that the sytem is working.

I am staggered by the amount of virtue signalling hysteria a democratic election in a foreign country has engendered, not to mention the degree of sheer, downright abuse of decent people to which this hysteria has given rise.

We should get a grip and remember our manners. It is ill bred and mannerless to abuse others. For example, such words as: 'bigot, fascist, deplorable' and 'populist' (where it is meant negatively) should not be aimed at others. We should never call anyone anything we would not want to be called ourselves.

Trump is no different from any of the other politicos save in 2 regards, he does not try to put a smiley face on appalling actions and he speaks 2 languages fluently. He speaks American English and he speaks 'deplorable' the language of forgotten people and old guys and poverty, I don't know the man but he isn't so different from men of his generation, is he much different to Berkow? Look at his past? Is he different to Vaz who is sleazy? or any of the others??

Some people can present themselves as respectable and God only knows the bloody Clintons did and Blair, the family man come war criminal, is it better to be a 'sexist' than bomb women every day as Obama did? Only the hard of thinking can truly think there is a fag paper's room between the scum bags that represent us the world over.

Democracy must mean that the uncouth, the brash, the 'deplorables' get their chance. The current political situation created a Trump shaped space and he walked into it.

Keep poking democracy in the eye and see what the alternative is, we already have government by the courts creeping in everywhere, better surely to accept the reality, that this president doesn't put much of a gloss on things.......whereas the others have mollified us with their mealy mouths. In the end it is the same thing.

Brilliant post radicalnan. You absolutely hit the nail on the head! Democracy is a two way street, you have to accept that you may well get what you don't like as well as what you do. Mob rule is unacceptable in a civilised society as is the deliberate undermining of family members of the person you hate. i.e. Ivanka Trumps business interests solely because of who her father is! The gloating and triumphalism that has gone on in an attempt to embarrass and destroy this young woman particularly by certain entertainment groups is both horrid and hypocritical. I can't believe that even the odious Clintons would approve of that particular tactic - but perhaps they would, never ones to miss a chance!!

I don't know if Bercow, for all his verbalisms, along with Boris, could possibly be as misogynistic (is that a word?), racist, foul-mouthed and thinks he has so much money he can just use the office of presidency for his own gains... his so-called life is unlike any other politician that I have ever heard of with the exception of Putin or North Korea's leader. Even they do not use Twitter as a voice to rant against anyone who disagrees with him.

He is a CHILD. News pundits try to say he will now dial-back as he lost against the judges. He'd fire them if he could. The presidency is not 'The Apprentice' and am ashamed he has trampled all over the office. WTF are the other Republicans going to do when in two years they lose the House and Senate?

However some of the above posts which have been written IMO in plain English have given me explanations & answers to a number of thoughts & questions that have been mulling over.

Does any Gners have any knowledge of how in other countries the everyday man the street is reacting to the New POTUS.

I also wonder if there is the same media coverage, hand wringing in some cases, ridicule or even worry about a prospective visit from the not so'great man' as there in our country.

It would be nice to have some insight.

To me, a non- Brit, Ana, the interest in and knowledge of politics and governments in other countries is a very positive aspect of the British character.

In other countries of my experience( USA, France, Russia, Italy, Spain ) only those with the highest level of education even know a little about how other First World countries are governed because they are only interested in their own government. Exceptions are The Netherlands, Germany and Scandanavia, in my experience.

Ana The British are very self righteous, always on the moral high ground and ALWAYS right! We do have a habit of moralising at other countries, when our own affairs are someimes somewhat suspect. It's probably a hangover from Empire when of course we used this unfortunate trait to good advantage!

And it doesn't work the other way does it? Look at the huffing and puffing when Obama gave his opinion on whether or not we should leave the EU...

I think that interference (!!!) did more harm than good - we like to tell, but don't like to be told!! Again, overtones of Empire!!!

I'm sick of people like Lily Allen and now grans on this site thinking they speak for everyone. I admire Mr Trump and support all his policies; I only wish they could be enacted here too. Here is a man who could have had a very comfortable retirement but has voluntarily taken on one of the most difficult roles in the world. Not only that he has refused to take a salary other than a statuary $1 ( Meryl Streep match that!) and his family are having their business interests destroyed just by association.

He was democratically elected but the media likes to pretend he has no support. Millions of people around the world support him but that's not news, is it. The petition to allow him to come to the UK received no publicity whereas the one to ban him is top of the parliamentary petition website.

A lot of presidents before him,, back to Carter, have banned immigrants from entering the USA and also deported thousands of undesirables and it was actually Obama who drew up the 7 countries on the list that Trump wanted to use. They were on that list because they did not vet people adequately; the fact that they were also Muslim countries speaks volumes. All those 'refugees welcome' people should use their energies to protest against other Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia who have refused to take in any in case there are terrorists amongst them instead of advocating the Western world takes them. Oh, and by the way, there's already a wall along the Mexican border put up by previous presidents. Trump just wants to strengthen it.

Roll on Le Pen, Geert Wilder et al all being elected in Europe. They will help to bring down the corrupt EU and stop mass immigration of people who hate our way of life and want to bring our countries down to the same cesspit they are supposedly escaping from.

I don't like Mr Trump for his misogyny, general behavior etc etc. however I'm sick of (usually) the left undermining and delegitimizing his election. Similar to the remoaners over here. Anyone who doesn't agree is either old , ill informed, prejudiced, stupid or northern. Why can't we have respectful debates which although passionately acknowledging differences do not degenerate to hideous personal abuse.

President Trump has no political background, so hasn't learned the art of politics, whereas those who have, have learned how to manipulate, play to the popular gallery and generally appear to be something, and someone that they in fact are not! President Reagan as a one time actor as well as a governor of California, knew this and played the part perfectly, The Kennedy's, Clinton's, Bush, to name a few also smiled and charmed their ambitious way to their advantage. Obama too was full of charm and bonhomme, while quietly bombing Syria, and, among other things compiling lists of undesirable countries, but not making a song and dance about it, a failure on the part of Trump. (given time,he'll no doubt learn to be as devious as the rest of them) Never judge a book by its cover, the truth of what you see can be very different.

If you want to know what thinking Americans actually believe? Check his approval ratings. This is the official Gallup site. Lots to click around. But scroll down to see how he measures up at this point in time compared to past presidents. And compared to party affiliation. It will be a bumpy road for him. He thinks he can be an autocrat, but he is throwing away an opportunity to serve his country in an appropriate way.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a lot of people haven't the courage to air it particularly on here, so much easier to run with the herd! While I don't agree with everything quizqueen for example has posted, I admire him/her for honestly expressing an opinion and not being afraid of the outrage of sanctimonious posters on this thread.
