Macron was a member of Hollande's Socialist Party and has been a government minister. He's a former investment banker and civil servant. AFAIK he has a 'clean nose'. The people in France who follow politics will have heard of him, but his relative lack of baggage could be an advantage.

The polls are showing that Le Pen won't win outright in the first round of voting. In the second round, Fillon and Macron voters are likely to unite behind whichever one is left. But who knows?

My bet is that both France and Germany will have socialist leaders by the Autumn, which could be interesting, given that the rest of Europe seems to be heading towards the right.

Rinouchka I see where Fillon says he's going to run no matter what. Is he the 'Trump du France'? I think their republican party are trying to block him anyway they can. Are they wanting to avoid what happened in the US? They need a strong candidate to beat LePen And who is Macron...what party? So many US parallels there.

Love that Mr T may at last have to release his tax returns. I bet he'll make sure there's so many different reports and so many different figures no one will know which is the genuine one. So much false news hiding the real!

If he lasts that long they think one of the real sticking points will be when he goes to the house to request the money for his projects. Interestingly some of which are the same as Obama wanted but the Republicans would never release the money.

Just catching up on this thread. Can I just jump back a couple of pages to DJ's link about stepping in and say that there's more to it than just the four examples of what to say. Stuff like taking a few moments to assess the situation, never step between two angry people and always make sure you have your back to an exit or way out. If it's a verbal bullying assault sometimes it's enough to just stand quietly beside or near the victim, if possible with others. But never, ever put yourself in a vulnerable position. DJ was intervening from a position of authority and she knew one of the boys which gave her a distinct advantage and knowledge of how to handle the situation, (I bet the What If's really kicked in afterwards!), but to go in blind not knowing what the aggressor is carrying or his/her strength? It's no wonder people just stand by.

Republicans must be in despair... Trump is throwing away any standing or respect for the presidency and in the end, when he is gone (not re-electable in 2020 because of the mess that will be created) they will be an un-electable party as well. They are so handicapped right now putting out his fires that they have little time to look for a new recruit that could be successful.

If Ronald Reagan could play the role, it's really mind-boggling that Trump can't at least walk the walk... (forget the talk, he can't put a sentence together).
