That is a good point, ww. I've just heard it made by Bre Payton and Mary Katharine Ham (Federalist Radio Hour on the Trump Inauguration) but in a different way. They were talking about what they see as Democrats' "scatter gun" approach to Trump: instead of focussing on a few really important things, they are blasting everything and anything to do with Trump, even, for instance, why the press wasn't allowed into the hotel where he was going to be staying the day before he arrived (to anyone with a brain it's obvious that security measures had to be arranged and put in place; a few American presidents have been assassinated) and some hooha about him avoiding the press when all he did was go and get some dinner in privacy.
Similarly, as you say, Melania is a distraction, part of the scatter gun hits.
