A bad day for the world

today is the 27th anniversary when the berlin wall was torn down bringing freedom to millions including members of my own family. But as we celebrate that, trump threatens to build a new one. We live in scary times, no doubt about it.

Hilary has a long record of corruption and some very unsavoury things linked to her and Bill, are they really any different to Trump?

Like Brexit people want change and have become anti establishment and there was a choice between 2 terrible people. The world may be slightly safer with Hilary at the helm, she is a war monger.

We have to trust the American people to make their choice as we made ours to leave EU.

Had there been someone else as candidate would you all have been so 'open mouthed' that Hilary with all her scandals and years of Clinton in power behind her losing? They are as bad as each other but as we destroy people within politics is it a ny wonder better people do not make it to the top.

I feel a step back from another war this morning and for that I am grateful.

Unbelievable the world's gone mad. A racist bigot, whose never pretended to be anything else, is the choice of the American people. Scary times.

It seems so strange that so many of the American people have voted for someone who represents all that they are angry about - rampant, bullying capitalism that has created such a big divide between rich and poor. So little insight and naïve hope. The shouting crowds at Trump's rallies were so eerily reminiscent of recordings of the Hitler rallies. He too promised the Earth and to make their country great.

Isn't it about time that we stopped our political love affair with the USA, stopped copying their materialistic capitalism, and philosophically turned towards our real neighbours and friends in Europe? We need to move on and create something of our own that reflects the depth of our own civilisation and a more inclusive future. This is not currently happening...

I must admit to having serious doubts about Trump but like his Vice President Elect. Clinton is also a worry. She would have done and put up with anything to become president.
Let's hope that Trump gets up to the plate and do what he has promised.

I've been terrified of this for some time and now almost as scared as I felt when Maggie was elected here. Can't for the life of me see why the US voters couldn't see the man for what he is, (no, don't like Hillary much, but she couldn't have been as appalling as him), but the damage is done and now they've got to live with the consequences and hope that they won't be as devastating as we all fear. Why do I suspect that they'll go through the same post-election nightmare realisation that so many felt here post Brexit vote? Agree whole-heartedly with you, whitewave and cornergran!

Trump will be part of a system of checks and balances that just doesn't exist in the non free world. He will mellow with power, have to work with advisors and will also have to persuade others to get his ideas enacted. Everything he does will be subject to free criticism by a free press and will be modified by two parliamenatry houses.

Yesterday, in Iran a man was blinded as a punishment for (an admittedly heinous) crime. There are no elections in theocratic Iran which can reject this level of barbarism.

And, for the record, I am no admirer of Trump. A sense of proportion, though, needs to be kept.

I was watching a documentary about a US gun store a few days ago, & I guessed then that this might happen. The owner's son, a thoughtful, intelligent 25 year old nicknamed 'Commie' by his family because of his left leaning views, stated that he'd have voted for Bernie Sanders but he would be voting for Trump because of Clinton's views on gun control.

America missed a massive opportunity in not nominating Sanders. Clinton didn't speak to the working classes, & the lasting impression that she was corrupt probably sealed her fate. I didn't like her but I'd have preferred her over the alternative. My only consolation is that we will be following my granddaughter's lead & calling him President Trumpy Bum for the next 4 years.

That's a response to the one about the need to generate business. We were very fed up with him up here. He rode roughshod over planning regulations and individuals who got in his way over his Aberdeen golf course (sold as a golf course but only an excuse to build 'executive' houses on protected land.) One small holding in the centre of it all refused to sell to him and 5000 of us took a share in it as he wouldn't be able to sue all of us.
He's an appalling bully. God help America.

Putin will be rubbing his hands in glee & progressing the build up of arms near the Baltic States, also aware that Europe is not as strong as it was & that fascists everywhere have been encouraged by this result & Brexit. Having wound people up with his lies, however much Trump now moderates his tone, the genie is out of the bottle.

I've never been one for conspiracy theory. But why have the polls for both Brexit and this shambles been so wrong. And whilst I'm all for democracy and freedom I just don't understand whilst all the folk my age and younger that I speak too all feel the same and yet this has happened? My DD just says it shows what money can buy. Good luck world we are going to need it!

There is a glimmer of hope - remember Yes, Prime Minister! Let's hope his advisers are less extreme than he is. With a daughter and son-in-law living in new York I do feel very worried!

I dispair too, lets hope his health fails either naturally....

My US passport has gone into the drawer for at least the next 4 years. (I only have to use it for entering the US).
