None of it is very edifying, nigglynellie; whether we're doing it or other EU countries are..

'Bribe' may be an emotive word but that's how I feel at the moment.

It didn't make me feel any better when I read this soon after

Saying it's an 'incentive' or a 'good deal' doesn't make it any better, it just sanitises it.

But the French authorities are considering altering tax arrangements to encourage/bribe banks to relocate post Brexit. Others are murmuring about doing the same. Why is this ok, but Nissan some sort of underhand dirty deal? What's the difference?!

I am now reading that the deal is 'not' going through as suggested.

Seems silly to need to pay companies to remain in UK when by remaining inside the EU no payments would be necessary!

Indeed- a really dangerous slippery slope and will backfire big time if that is what was done.

If she'a made promises about incentives to one company she'll have to do the same to every company.
It will happen in 2019 when the two years is up. That's when Brexit really happens.

The whole CETA and TTIP argument is whether companies can sue governments if they do not make as much profit as they expect. It looks to me as if May is pre-empting that.

So - those who are worried that Nissan may take their manufacturing overseas because they are offered incentives by other countries are now complaining that they may be 'bribed' or 'offered incentives' to stay here?

Bribe is a very emotive word.

Still very vague - 'a separate person', 'additional relief' and how long will it be until it becomes apparent whether or not Brexit has made the plant less competetive?

With regard to the word 'bribes', despite Nissan's spokesman saying that no compensation package or "special deal" had been done with Nissan to secure the investment no business in its right mind which would stand to lose money by staying in the UK if we leave the single market would be satisfied with just 'assurances'. There has to be a financial element to the 'assurances.

Unless, of course, she 'assured' them that we're going to end up staying in the EU because it is too difficult to get out of

A few weeks ago Nissan said that they would need the assurance of back up for any taxes payable once the UK leaves the EU - they have parts made in the EU which will incur tax when they import them and then after the are put into a car they will be taxed again when the cars are exported. I imagine the sums have been d one and that is the cheaper option than paying benefits to all the workers who will otherwise lose their jobs.

I absolutely do not believe that Nissan would have made that decision without a sweetener.

I haven't read that anywhere, not even in the Guardian. Where did you hear it, whitewave? (which is what I asked before...)

Nissan have been assurance that if as a result of the government negotiations over Brexit, they loose income and profit, the government has assured them that the tax payer will bail them out. I.e. A blank cheque.

Where has that information come from, whitewave? About the 'blank cheque'?

The difference being is that the Tories have promised Nissan a blank cheque if they can't negotiate a single market deal. That is entirely different to rescuing a company in retrospect. So are they going to offer the same deal to other companies?!
