New thread folks!

GO just wants to stir.
As I am from the Midlands I hope you are not going to fight over the top of my head.
What have you all got against George Osborne?
And what's wrong with what he wants to do for the North? Makes sense to me.
We are far too overcrowded down here in the south. Shift some of it up north and perhaps people will want to live there. (Please)

Can I ask a question.
If you 'Northerners with 'nouse'' think George Osborne is out to line his pockets and couldn't care less about the North what do you think of the others on the Board or associated with it?
Or are they all basically corrupt?
Trouble is, by his own admission. he is still learning about a lot of things.

Anyone with nouse would know that Osborne is not out to line his financial pockets - he's rich enough already.
He's only 45 and was Chancellor of the Exchequer at 37 and far from spent - he's lining up his political ducks and trying to establish his own 'court'.
He has to hang his hat somewhere - why not with the hard done by Northerners.
Why should he lay down this project just because he is now a back bencher? Yes, the mighty have fallen, but at least he's not walking away.
I agree with his not walking away - unlike Cameron, GO obviously still has political ambitions.
Riverwalk as the Duchess of Windsor almost said "You can never be too rich". I doubt if GO would turn up the opportunity to make more money.
My question to the negative posters is this.
If you take Osborne out of the equation what do you think about the others signed up to it?. No project is just one man/woman.
Osborne started the project whilst Chancellor, he is a Northern MP (at the moment), he has presumably fought to keep the project going and has the government on board.
If the project turns out to be total shite then fine, go for it , knock it.
As yet the only comments are not really interested in the Northern Power House as a concept just the dislike of George Osborne .
What has happened past or present regarding the Northern Power House project that warrents the acid attack and I repeat ' what is it about the others connected with the project you don't like? Or is it just game to have a go at the man but not the project?????

You and others are looking as though the dislike/distain with Osborne is all about class warfare and not the Northern Power House concept/project .
What do you think about the Northern Power House project or do you have no other remit other than making your dislike of Osborne known.?
The spelling is nous.
Good post, pogs. The Northern Powerhouse is not about George Osborne. If it succeeds, he will reap some praise; if it fails he will reaps some blame and bitching, but it's not 'about' him.
I think many of the regular political posters on GN cannot admit or allow that someone with whose political outlook they don't agree can genuinely want to do some good in the world.
Exactly, bags
It's that old separating an idea from a person thing that so many people don't seem to be able to do.
What is the Northern Powehouse thing supposed to achieve? Are the ideas associated with it good ideas or bad ideas (and if so, why)? What is the purpose of NP. Do I agree with the aim? These are the sorts of questions people who are interested in politics rather than politicians would be asking.
In short, who bloody cares a fig about George Osborne except people who feel they have to hate him because they can't just disagree and argue what would be better ideas?
Well I could have put it like that
I neither like nor dislike him; however he did seem to be using it as a stick with which to beat Theresa May after she sacked him, although perhaps he is forging ahead with this and can put more time and energy into it now.
However, she is apparently 'onside' re the Northern Powerhouse.
Jalima
If she is ' onboard' with the Northern Power House project how is he is using it to ' beat her with a stick'.
I thought george Osborne reported that she was not 'on board' but she has now had a change of mind

Wise move, best to keep George happy and pursuing his worthwhile initiative.
"As yet the only comments are not really interested in the Northern Power House as a concept just the dislike of George Osborne ."
Ahem! Objection m'lud!
I am very interested in the concept of the Northern Power House and have been bleating on about a rebalancing of wealth to the North for most of my adult life. What I've said is that I reserve judgment until I know what is intended. At this stage, I have read some initial policy documents, but it's going to need real financial (and other) commitment to make it work. GO could be the man to kick ar*e - we'll see.
Michael Heseltine was the driving force behind improvement in Liverpool, after Mrs T wanted to let the city wither away. There's much more to be done before it returns to the thriving city it once was.

I wasn't just me who thought she was 'raining on his parade' then! Therefore giving him an opportunity to undermine her.
I think it will be interesting to see what happens to Manchester and its devolved budget over the next few years. Critics claim that central government are using it is a way of cutting the budget to Manchester, while offloading /blame for cuts to the city council.
Osborne and Burnham (if he wins the mayoral election, which he almost certainly will) are going to have to work together.
My reservation about the project is that it seems to be concentrated on the big cities at the expense of the smaller former mill towns, which overwhelmingly voted Leave. Therefore, it might not address the issues which came to light in the referendum vote of people feeling 'left behind'.
My other concern is about the distribution of any new wealth created. During the nineteenth century, there were some mind-bogglingly wealthy people in the North, while the workers earned a pittance.
Keep posting stuff like your last few posts, please, dd.
Concern about the concentration on cities makes sense to me. However I do wonder if the idea behind that is that improving the cities will have an effect on the surrounding areas, much as London does.
Also, cities that thrived during the industrial revolution need improvements. I don't think money recently spent on improving, for instance, Dundee's industrial waterfront, has been ill spent. Likewise improvements in Liverpool.
I don't live in a city (haven't for most of my life in the north or the south) but I reckon I benefit indirectly if the city nearest to me is thriving.
