The Queen's Birthday Honours

Much as I love Rod and I think he's sexy what has he really done to be awarded a gong, for goodness sake? He's a musician who had a lot of luck and made a lot of money. And as for Ant and Dec........don't get me started.

Let's scrap the honours system. It's outdated and, in many cases, has become politically motivated.

Not quite the same. No ambulances or fire brigades in the sky either, or a well equipped hospital that you can be rushed to. An accident in space could literally leave you helpless and without help to die a lonely long drawn out death. Venturing I to the unknown is imo a feat of courage. Bit more Robert Falcon Scott than Lewis Hamilton.

I can't believe why some get awards like actors and suchlike they are doing a job they enjoy and are well paid for a lot of people I know worked in same career /job for over 40odd years without perks or good incomes it's no big deal sorry if I sound grumpy but fed up of them and us world which we seem to be in at moment I don't begrudge people who have helped others in some way .

Same for racing drivers niggly , it's choice

I think it's extremely brave to go into space, one false move so to speak and that's you done and dusted eeek! No RAC in the sky!!
I do think that honours are handed out a bit willy nilly at times, but perhaps those people have done a lot for other causes that we don't know about.

Some really deserve their gong. I really don't understand why, before we've even had the referendum, Cameron has given some to the people who have helped organize the IN campaign. Also, why do some get these awards for just doing their job?

Well, I worked in the Civil Service for nearly 40 years (in a rather lowly position). I never got the medal I thought I deserved but DH and I were invited to a garden party at the Palace a few years ago.

Hayley Turner got an OBE, definitely on her own merit, although it probably didn't please Emma Spencer.

Nananandgrampy , is it brave or an adrenalin fix? I couldn't do it but there are many who want to, perhaps daring more then brave , no different to the many who climb Everest , and I am not being grumpy

I agree Time Peake does deserve his award but Ant and Dec!!! What have they ever done to benefit the UK? They are two not very talented young men who have made a lot of money doing not very much. However, I am probably prejudiced against them because I have never seen a programme with them in when I didn't want to throw a shoe at the screen!

Ps I think Tim Peake IS brave Annie in light of the Challenger disaster. It takes bravery to go into space- not something I would care to do for sure !

I agree with Alima . I'm a big fan of Rod and there have been honours for much less ! As for Tim Peake, I agree , it's for the achievement . Many others train and support but he said that in his acceptance which I thought was lovely.

Just to say I think Tim Peake is fantastically brave.

Although I have always like Other Bugger's Efforts (OBE) everyone I know who got one fell into that category.

My DH deserves the Order of the Medal As Big As a Frying Pan for putting up with me for fifty years! But he has already been honours listed, so he won't get another!
