I agree with durhamjen about the craziness that ensures successful asylum seekers lose their rented accommodation within 4 weeks of being given asylum status. It'a bonkers, a young Sudanese man interviewed is now a rough sleeper so of course he can't get work. That's the kind of bureaucracy that needs attention. Alea's link above, about the need for EU nationals to be studying/working etc in order to remain in the UK is what's important in respect of the Hungarian man.

Some of you seem to be finding this man guilty without knowing the facts. You are declaring this to be a miscarriage of justice for similar reasons dj.

I have just read about asylum seekers being made homeless after four weeks. Should they be sent back? Of course they should, they are foreign and homeless.

As she appears to have married and had children in the UK surely the registrars at those times should have beeen the ones checking her credentials.

I have no particular sympathy with this Hungarian chap - if he wants to take direct action his skills are needed in his own country right now.

We are a liberal democracy but that has to be guarded - remember Blair and Blunkett doing their best to impose ID cards? The majority of citizens were against it and they backed down.

felice I think it is more a case of an individual in the Home Office latching on to a case and throwing the book at it than a generalised attacking of easy targets. I am pretty sure that this woman, with the help of her attorney, will be able to resolve this situation and do the necessary paperwork and she will stay.

This story smacks to me of "thereby hangs a tale". How come her employer didn't ask for proof of eligibility to work in the UK? That would have revealed the problem far sooner.

Yes thats it thanks. Considering her Stepfather was serving with the British Army when she arrived in the UK the whole thing smacks of attacking the easy targets who do not have the Human rights brigade behind them.

I would be more concerned for the Woman who is likely to be deported after living in the UK for 50 years, I just read an article on this on the BBC news website.
She went to the UK with her Mother who became a British Citizen and they assumed she was one also.
I doubt if she would be able to return to her country of birth and just get on with it.

She is a care worker and I wonder if she is now coming to retirement age ??

I think the point being made by the OP is that the potential deportation is based on dodgy legal grounds. That would worry me. Once any government, left or right, starts bending the law to rid itself of irritations is a very dangerous road to start down. We are all rightly horrified by the north Korean approach , Saudi, Chinese etc to "dissidents". If this person has not broken the law, is not in breach of any immigration rules but is just rather annoying to the establishment why deport?

I think the crux of the matter is this man's 'self-employment'.
I'm sure if he was a self employed plumber or carpenter or gardener, the Guardian would say so.
In the absence of such detail I can only assume that 'self employment' is a euphemism for member of the awkward squad, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over him either.
Just because he wasn't charged with anything doesn't mean he wasn't costing the taxpayer anything in terms of police time etc.
Reading between the lines of newspaper stories applies to left wing publications as much as rightwing ones.
