If people want to wear white poppies then they should have their own day for it rather than highjacking Rememberance Day which is synonymous with red poppies.

White Poppy
(261 Posts)Here is an extract from an article on reasons for wearing a white poppy :
"Many of us instead wear a white poppy, the symbol of peace. We do so not because we feel the suffering of those who died or were bereaved any less, everyone agrees that we should commemorate the sacrifice.
But we fear that in remembering the First World War, too many people in government and the military are using the compassion that people feel to justify present and future wars."

Hear, hear mbody. I think today is the appropriate day for white poppies. Remembrance Day is for red.
So we are not supposed to think about peace on Armistice Day, are we not?
mbody it is not your Remembrance Day or anyone else's, it is everyone's. Why do you think it is reasonable for you to tell other people how they can remember?
I agree nigglynellie - World Peace Day.
I am not wearing one because I don't have one, and I am not going out anyway. But I am thinking about peace and prayed this morning.
However, I don't think my prayers will be answered.
When I told DH it's World Peace Day he gave a very hollow laugh.
I would echo that hollow laugh!! but who knows, maybe one day someone will have the magic potion! I think we're all entitled to our views, and should feel free to say so. Why is it that people on the left always indignantly/aggressively claim the moral high ground, with the rest of us being made to feel at best inadequate, and at worst warmongers! Nobody in their right mind wants war, but equally you can't leave a country defenceless, I think the Hitler war proved that, so prudent precautions are very necessary, just in case of a turn of events.
"Why is it that people on the left always indignantly/aggressively claim the moral high ground, with the rest of us being made to feel at best inadequate, and at worst warmongers!"
Why is it that people - presumably on the right, believe they can tell others how to show respect, etc.?
I imagine it is because one group sees peace as more important the wearing the "acceptable" item and the other thinks what you show to the world in the way you choose what to wear on a particular day is more important.
I don't think that the first is taking the moral high ground but just saying and standing up for what they believe in - peace. Perhaps those who seem like little dictators are not that either but just saying and standing up for what they believe in - the colour of a poppy.
Neither lot should be dictating what is the "right" colour of poppy to display the "right" attitude of mind. That is what those who wish to choose their colour are saying.
Gracesgran, do you wear a red poppy at all?
I think it is interesting that some people seem to insist only the red poppy will do, whereas those who wear/believe in white poppies accept both and just want the white poppy to have its place beside the red. As I have said before a great number of those who died believed more in peace, as did the women who set up the white poppy movement after losing their male relatives in WW1. To deny it a place is to to disrespect those women.
Good posts Elegran and trisher.
Except that white poppy holders think that white is better, and dont actually wear the red ones. Some of them.
I find some posters, when you actually disect what they write, are not actually saying what they appear to be saying.
Spinning is going on.
A bit harder to do when things are written.
Not actually saying what they appear to be saying, what do you mean soon?
Except that white poppy holders think that white is better, and dont actually wear the red ones
For heavens sake soon you will be re-running the Big Endian, Little Endian rebellions if you are not careful. How much more nit-picking can you do.
Quite, quite ridiculous. Can you not see that there are also some red poppy wearers who do not wear white poppies, some white poppy wearers who do not wear red, some who wear both and some who neither and they all have a right to do just that. Some in each camp will have thought carefully about what they do, some will have just done as they have always done, and some will have given it no thought at all and no one but no one has any right to expect them to do differently just because they think they should while everyone but everyone has the right to explain why they do so it if they choose to.
Annie
You are well aware of what you do Gracesgran. And so am I.
I have absolutely no idea what you are accusing me of soon but if you are going to accuse someone you might explain what the accusation is. Surely that is simple justice. I really mean it soon, I have no idea what you are talking about and do not like to be accused without the accusation made clear.
If anyone else can make sense of this do, please, explain as I am completely lost.
Your last 2 paragraphs of post 15.31pm
You really want me to disect it?
You will say it is nit-picking. You will say this and that.
It isnt just that post. When people really read some of the posts you write, and untangle them, some of them are not saying what they first or even appear to mean.
I dont really want to go into dissection. And I would have thought neither would you want to me to disect further of your posts.
I did one slightly this morning didn't I . Which was just as well in that one as the points were minimised to such an extent
Slightly off piste, but has anyone ever grown white poppies?
I have grown red ones, pink ones and Danish flag ones (they were lovely)
I've never seen white ones growing in gardens but they must do.
Perhaps those who seem like little dictators are not that either but just saying and standing up for what they believe in - the colour of a poppy
Well, not quite sure who the 'little dictators' are but that does come across as a bit aggressive imo.
But it is probably not meant to I'm sure
.
Gracesgran - you aren't on you down in being completely lost in response to soon's post. I usually follow what people on this forum mean by their posts. Not so with soon - I often feel totally bewildered. I was not bewildered by your comment about white poppy wearers feeling that "white is better" soon, it was clear you were having a real go at those who wear them. You obviously feel the only poppy to wear is a red one.
Can I be clear, I have pals who wear white poppies. I always wear a red one. Last year I knitted a lot of red poppies, to the British Legion pattern. They were sold and any funds given to the British Legion. I'm a lefty as everyone on here knows. that doesn't mean I'm not aware of the sacrifices made by those who serve. I have family members who fought in WW1 and 1, a great grandfather who was a fusileer during the indian Mutiny (and how I wish I could talk to him about that ). In addition, I've worked as a sw with people suffering because of their service to this country, both as 'clients' and as colleagues.
As others on this thread have said. It doesn't matter a jot what colour your poppy is, what matters is that you are a thinking member of our society and showing your respect for those who have fallen
"The Royal British Legion has no official opinion on the wearing of white poppies, stating that it is a matter of choice, the Legion doesn't have a problem whether you wear a red one or a white one, both or none at all."
It's a shame others do not take notice of the RBL.
By the way, I have collected door to door for the RBL while wearing a white poppy. Nobody said they were not going to buy one because I was wearing it.
whoops, x posted with soon and resequartz there
