Here is an extract from an article on reasons for wearing a white poppy :
"Many of us instead wear a white poppy, the symbol of peace. We do so not because we feel the suffering of those who died or were bereaved any less, everyone agrees that we should commemorate the sacrifice.
But we fear that in remembering the First World War, too many people in government and the military are using the compassion that people feel to justify present and future wars."
No, I wouldn't buy or wear a white poppy. The sale of poppies goes towards supporting ex-service people and the display of poppies reminds us of their sacrifices and of the pity and horror of war. The white poppy is gesture politics.
The world would be a lot happier if nuns and monks and the whole malarkey had never existed. The bit of good work done by some of them is wiped out by the immense amount of bad. Shall we give white poppies and what they say in the middle a rest?
Many catholic nuns and Christian brothers did bring a lot of peace and goodness . Just as there are good and bad in all faiths and all walks of life . Are all mothers bad because some mothers have abused and or murdered their children ?
I didn't call you stupid, dj. What I called stupid was the statement containing "obviously hadn't noticed...". I called that stupid because you have no way of knowing what other people notice.
So had you noticed that the centre of the white poppy said peace, bags - or anyone else who criticised me for saying I'd rather have peace? I'd rather you didn't call me stupid. Oh, of course, you didn't, just told me to stop saying such stupid things. Of course that was only one thing. How about the rest of the stupid things you are referring to, in your rude way.
Reminds me of something we were told as the children of Catholics, rq, which was that if enough people throught the world said enough Hail Marys then there would be peace and goodness in the world. Something like that anyway.
Never going to happen, wishful, fairy world thinking.
The intention is fine. The method... If... then... Aye, right.
You were reaping the harvest of the seeds sown earlier, dj, during the debate on white or red poppies. I am glad to hear that you had no intention of implying that anyone didn't prefer peace.
In fact, it is an insult to those who don't wear a white poppy, or any poppy, to assume that they don't want peace.
It is getting a bit like those facebook shares "Like this and share it if you . . . . ." implying that if you don't "like" and "share" it then you are a miserable bugger who doesn't give a shit about the thing the poster is promoting. Or shouting out at the theatre that you believe in fairies, because every time a child says they don't believe, a fairy dies.
