Why shouldn't a vegan be responsible for the environment and rural affairs? Because some farmers breed animals for meat? In that case perhaps anyone with private health insurance shouldn't be responsible for the NHS. At least a vegan will consume some of the products of the country side.
I think the idea that a party can overcome the personality cult which seems to surround leaders now and make policy in a cooperative way is very interesting. A leader is not a dictator just someone who helps a party to move forward.

these have been my thoughts too Petra and Devorgilla. He has had a happy life on the back benches pursuing his own hobby horses, and being thrust into the limelight and position of power, where he has to bend his own and very personal principles ( because he will have to) will not suit him.

Nor did they want it, so hard to see how it would ever work.He already looks more haggard,and at his age, I would say that you have to be very ambitious and driven to cope.

Don't worry, folks, don't forget they are the Opposition.
They will have plenty of time to oppose, antagonise and alienate a majority of the electorate before the next election.
(Perhaps starting with some of their own MPs and farmers and many long-time Labour supporters.)

Perhaps Kerry learns fast and will realise that not all farmers are the stereotypical rich huntin' landowners some on the left assume they are.

A curious choice, though, JBC may be a London MP now but he was brought up in rural Shropshire, albeit it in relative affluence, not scratching a living from the land.

I hope Kerry will learn to appreciate where her bread and butter margarine literally comes from.

Another thing hit me yesterday when he was at the service: he's not patriotic. Forget the lack of style or taste: that's unforgivable.

The ministry of agriculture[or whatever we want to call the job so I dont get into more trouble], is about a whole lot more than animal welfare.

What if say she has to go to Brussells to debate the bad price of beef or whatever, when does she really want the animals alive at all for eating?

Actually there are loads of things in the link. A lot of people working in rural affairs are not going to be happy either.

I think Charles Clarke put his finger on it when he said that JC is an opposition politician. When he said that, I thought, yes, he's one of those people who always has the answer of how to fix things: but when they have the power to fix things they're like a rabbit it the headlight.

I see where you are both coming from but many a good minister from all sides have developed excellent skills to cover their brief.

I couldnt think what the proper name was. I didnt mean to imply to anyone that didnt know, that it was a farming role only. So I can sort of see why you posted what you did.

I think her sympathy is going to be a bit thin on the ground, to say the least.

If you assume she will have no sympathy with farmers because she is vegan then it can be assumed Cameron dismissing the refugees is a racist .

Labour voting meat producing farmers are going to be right chuffed that their minister is a vegan.

Farmers have something to do with rural affairs too, let alone parts of the environment.
