On the news they said that the police no longer counted demonstrators, but the organisers said 250,000. Wow! It certainly looked a lot.

I remember all the marches that I have been on in the past (CND, Vietnam etc) the count always seemed to be on the low side.

Apparently, nowadays 'they' can accurate measure the number on a demo by mobile phone activity.

The authorities for some reason, always lower the count.

Well they are punishing the poor again. Child tax credit which keeps many families on low pay afloat is to be abolished.

The petition doesn't say child tax credit 'is to be abolished', and we don't know what, if any, cuts will be made to it yet.

The petition is to let Osborne know that we do not want child tax credits to be abolished. It's a bit pointless waiting until Osborne announces it's going to be done before complaining about it.

My point is that it was irresponsible to state that child tax credit 'is to be abolished' as though it were a fact.

Whatever will happen at the budget, or perhaps later in the autumn, they are softening us up for something related to tax credits and it won't be good news for those poor with children that is certain. You can already hear it in the rhetoric - "merry-go-round of benefit" "hardworking tax payers" And the biggest joke, those paying tax on minimum wages - how much would that be then compared to what they get in tax credit?

This is the narrative that they hope will convince the public that making the poor suffer is for the greater good. So we must all listen and learn over the next few months from the mouth of those who have never wanted for anything. Clearly to have so much they must have worked hard indeed

How do you know that ana? But even if a Labour Government hit the poorest in society as this Tory Government is preparing to do, I am not sure that validates the argument for hitting the poorest, and thus ensuring even greater child poverty than ever.

I'm not trying to validate anything, just pointing out that no one in the shadow cabinet has ever wanted for anything (apart from a new leader!).

And Labour did admit before the election that they'd have to target the welfare budget if they formed the next government. I could find links, but I'm sure you'll take my word for it!

ana it has nothing to do with party and everything to do with total lack of fairness in my book. I am not interested in which party would do what, that to me, is totally immaterial - what is being done to those least able to defend themselves like the children - who have seen from the start of this wretched government their lives being undermined by cuts from benefits, sure start centres, etc and which will, after the next budget bring even more pressure to bear on them, is nothing short of scandalous. I wouldn't care which government was in power I would feel the same.
